@ffaw@decayable.ink @lina@eientei.org @mint@ryona.agency the big reason source died off is that Valve only licenses out the Source engine if you can somehow get ahold of their licensing department, and they're probably more willing to if you're either a major developer/in the biz (Respawn Entertainment), or you have such a good relationship with them (Garry Newman). Valve just assumed that everyone would use the source engine for mods, which was great until that demographic aged out and people began to use Unity/Unreal for indie games which had far better license terms and licensing departments.

Kernel level anticheat happens for the same reasons you can't have testkits/devkits without activation anymore. It's because the people who get them, instead of deciding to write homebrew and maybe seek out a job somewhere, decide the best thing to do is to use them to fucking cheat in online games or cause chaos. @lina@eientei.org @mint@ryona.agency I also think if anything, the Fortnite look is the "UE5" look in the same way the UE3 had a very distinct look with lighting with excessively blown out bloom and a specific texture look. 3 UE3 games, all have the same lighting and texture look.

UE5 really depends on the developer, but there's a lot of jokes about the "UE5 stutter" and a lot depends on how much developers abuse shit like blueprints (CPU usage abuse). The higher-end UE5 games are either too photorealistic or look like Fortnite.
