This is the most obvious statement of this millennium but apparently it needs to be repeated for the people in the back:
The government does not give a fuck about you. None of them do. We built a system specifically to not trust the government.
The problem with that system is that we keep allowing said government to find loopholes within it that allow it to make whatever tyrannical rules it fucking wants without repercussions or revolt.
When it doesn't work (EARN IT Act), they just keep trying again (ID verification) and each plot will be attempted for years at a time. The feds are playing a war of attrition and are betting on you being forgetful. The communications decency act, the patriot act, TSA, and everything since then. That time they let Microsoft off the hook because their monopoly was too useful.
Nobody could have predicted 300 years ago that we would invent a system to instantaneously transmit vast amounts of information across tens of thousands of miles, and that it would become the backbone of political stability as it dictates everything people perceive to be real. We are more "aware" of our surroundings than ever, and yet simultaneously the least involved in their evolution than we've ever been.
The ID verification laws. We all knew, but now it's been confirmed: the US and Canadian governments are tying your device fingerprints to your financial and social security records to build a unified profile of your identity online on every major website that has that matching information. They are scanning you against a list of politically relevant people for undisclosed purposes.
This is not something Americans do. This is not what we stand for. Self host your online infrastructure. Encrypt and obfuscate fucking everything. This is the last chance you might ever get.
In the highly unlikely event I strike one too many nerves and alert the nearest glowie: I am mentally sane. I have no desire to kill myself and infact I have a very important purpose in life. I am not planning any surprise vacations. I do not take or distribute drugs, keep illicit material on my computer, or fail to pay my bills. I am a healthy, law abiding citizen, and in the event of my disappearance or death you should be very worried because they will probably come after you too.
I'm not anonymous. Real world violence and detainment is how they take your free speech away. Don't forget it.

Legend says that if you chant "Lunduke" in front of a mirror three times, a Red Hat PR slave will appear from the shadows to cry about how everyone is a nazi

I am rotting. No i didn't forget to release the mythos sources it's just becoming a PITA to finish even minor touchups because I'm worried about money. Trying to get a sidejob but every employer just wants webshit or AI slop.
In other news, I just realized my only PC floppy drive is destroying disks. Fun! It's not like I bought it solely to make backups or anything.

I won't call something released if it isn't in a state I'm proud of. Period. Would eat me alive. Deadlines have always been a crude suggestion

You've been in the industry long enough you should know better than this. Atari and Amiga were killed by their owners and the Microsoft+IBM monopoly. Not game piracy. Amiga Inc was not even a games company. Their leading product was hardware. Nobody wanted to own an Amiga computer because the IBM PC had caught up, was already in offices, had way more effective marketing, and the main audience interested in a multimedia computer already had their eyes on Nintendo and Sega. Commodore spent years flailing about, half-developing and throwing away different architectures, and not knowing who to sell Amiga hardware to. This is all VERY well documented.
DOOM's trial was under a shareware license. You got free marketing by being the most copied PC game in existence and benefitted greatly from it. 90% of people illegally copying the full version doesn't change that if you're outdoing Windows in install frequency.
Lastly, this additude is exactly why piracy exists. You need to directly and openly address the needs of people copying or they will not respect your boundaries. Games were always expensive, especially back then, and the internet changed the way distribution worked. People who illegally copy media today are also the biggest spenders. Let me tell you about myself. When I was a kid I didn't have money. I pirated shit all the time because it was the only way I was allowed to participate. Six years ago I pirated Cyberpunk 2077 because I did not want to pay full price for a game that was infamous for not working. I bought it months later because I liked it. I pirated dozens of movies because all of the easily accessible distribution methods are protected by Widevine malware, and the alternative is to spend way too much on a Bluray for my disc collection that I also don't own, and then decrypt it using a pirate program, which is illegal. If they didn't make being a customer so difficult, I wouldn't have done any of that. The story is the same for nearly everyone else you're pointing the finger at. To blame piracy is to completely ignore the factors which encouraged it, which can be tamed by the company who released the software if they have any theory of mind.
If you look up my Steam account today, I've spent thousands of dollars over the past decade on video games alone, and that's only on one store. Pirates are more than happy to pay for things that they want. If your game is being pirated, then that is something you are doing wrong.

Fun drinking game: Take a shot for every anti-libertarian US state or federal bill that has the words "protect", "kids", "child", "parent" or "terrorism" in it. Most participants die before arriving to the hospital.
