Reminder we will be talking to Nathaniel Borenstein live in T-22 hours and counting on the #lispyGopherClimate about his new #bookstodon synthesizing his long view of #AI and #ethics, and how he and others designed common components of email, the web, open standards and so forth, how they turned out and increasingly went wrong, the present and the future (and his autobiography). It will be live on https://anonradio.net:8443/anonradio at 0UTC Wed (your Tues.). with live chat in #lambdaMOO #VR as always.

#reminder that in about two hours, at 0UTC Wednesday ("Tuesday night"), we will be discussing Nathaniel Borenstein's new autobiographical book The Spirit of a Cyborg, and #ai and #ethics from someone who defined parts of how the internet we use every day work four decades ago, providing a long view of AI from Weizenbaum, Winograd, Minsky, Papert up to present day with a serious eye towards the future. I'll make the proper show toot in about an hour. Last minute questions please! + #emacs #lisp

@dougmerritt@mathstodon.xyz As you may know, I had an exchange about with with @jhlagado@jorts.horse about whether there was genuinely something magical about Z80s as a substrate (mostly virtual now, formerly mostly real) for computing. Or whether it was retro kitsch. This is similar to [dartmouth+] #basic and #lisp in different ways, though they are both spawn of that dartmouth workshop on AI in the mid-50s. But basic was basically an attainable home computer, and lisp was sort of commentary on fortran list macros.

Alright my fellow librerians, I am *just* seeing if #patreon treats a shop item specially in terms of putting it in front of lots of people and I will report back. So sorry about this apparently $5 lisp clim tutorial. I will put the org on my codeberg in a second secretly too. Remember the goal is to exfiltrate lisp community members from patreon into the show and we are being pragmatic because of how bad things are. #lisp #clim #paywalled https://www.patreon.com/screwlisp/posts/lisp-interface-5-167878977?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_link https://codeberg.org/screwlisp/secret-exclusive-git

In practice, any access to a stobj must return that stobj (i.e. with mv ~ values).

@ramin_hal9001@fe.disroot.org Clearly common lisp does not enforce singlethreadedness in the way acl2 does; however if you use the acl2 code, this will happen incidentally. Translating stobjs to setf and structs, and loop to loop$, lambda to lambda$, apply to apply$, [] format to fmt aren't broad-spectrum automatable because there are differences, but can generally be macroed in a particular project I think.

#dailyWords [ 2822 / 24000 ] #writing yesterday I clearly wrote 2822 words (95%+ prose) of my #commonLisp #DL book draft In June. I reached a minor decision point and eventually lost consciousness in its pickling brine.

I decided to peg my check-in-on-how-the-book-is-going at 24000 words. At my current instantaneous velocity, this will take about 10 days. Somewhat to my surprise, the book is extremely, extremely picture heavy, almost coffee-table heavy.

#nzpol can I just say the (pro-Trump) "National" political party's election billboards and I quote
"

(Labour is the center/right other party.)
would be bewilderingly misogynistic and what, anti-motherhood?If their previous successful election campaigns had not been:

- Take Back This Country
- Poor lives are not worth anything (Health minister)
- "If [they] had known how profitable candy flavored vape huff for kids would be, it would never have been illegal"

Just walked past one.

@yantar92@fosstodon.org Something I speculated but did not say was that some of the odd rush of data centres in odd places, like say Carney's Canada putting a huge datacentre in Alberta looks a lot like putting huge energy consumers physically close to fossil fuels as a natural (gas) customer while fossil fuels recede to e.g. modern solar. So devolution of power consumption to locally generated solar powered local devices seems like it will start beating the former eventually. @kentpitman@climatejustice.social

What is new I think is that before it was celebrity-worship, whereas now increasingly many developers' friends are evil-future-eliza running on the celebrity's gas-guzzling server farms. @jackdaniel@functional.cafe

@jackdaniel@functional.cafe Yeah, it is literally that the advertising people (as documented ind Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide) got a computer that was so good at making manipulative advertisements that now when we see or hear something that sounds legitimate and attractive, heuristically the right thing to do is to start running in the opposite direction. The remaining heuristic being something like, is the project already at least five years old at this point. - Deeply unfairly.

@vnikolov@ieji.de one would imagine that in the traditional deep learning style, if you have a large training dataset of human real/fake photograph labellings, in the domain of the training dataset you would expect to be able to make fake face images humans are more likely to choose as real than real face images. I guess this is why political ads and ads generally have so desperately adopted fake images in that fake images can be optimized for persuasivity moreso than reality can.
