We are looking to improve Org LaTeX export to produce fully accessible (PDF/UA2) documents, and we need help from users more familiar with accessibility and how to deal with it in LuaLaTeX and also PDFLaTeX. See the mailing list call for help https://list.orgmode.org/orgmode/87tsq6937o.fsf@localhost/ #orgmode #emacs #blind

@screwlisp@gamerplus.org @marcoxa@mastodon.social @mdhughes@appdot.net @me Native compilation, AFAIR, is since Emacs 28. It is utilizing libgccjit to compile ELisp into native binaries (just in time). Since Emacs 28 there have been slow developments on optimizing it even further - there is a work on type system and potentially type hints that may then be translated to better type-aware optimization.

@screwlisp@gamerplus.org @kentpitman@climatejustice.social AFAIK, at least in my field of research, people are trying to staff LLM and neural networks in general into pretty much every possible application. Something sticks, most things fail. I suspect that it is not different elsewhere. That's what hype is. Until people figure out where llm work and where it does not (and the limits of technical progress in the area), there will be massive misuse

I believe that I finally managed to track down the annoying element cache bug that is linked to editing plain lists. It has been reported a number of times, but it is hard to reproduce. Recently, Jason Terk has managed to record detailed logs of what is hapenning when the bug is trigerred, and I think the reason is related to successive edits coming between cache syncs. Now, if we confirm that https://cgit.git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/emacs/org-mode.git/commit/?id=7a134e7b216311f54ddb55e779d929454dd6d639 really works, it should hopefully eliminate one of the last cache bugs.

@screwlisp@gamerplus.org @kentpitman@climatejustice.social The way you state it is ambiguous. Cost in what terms? What kind of report? Does it require extensive literature search? Data processing? Depending on answers to these questions, the result will vary between AI is absolutely more superior to AI is a total waste of resources that also produces useless result.

Replying to
@screwlisp@gamerplus.org @kentpitman@climatejustice.social One of the speakers mentioned that all the resources should be channelled to fight the climate change (evena pausing the usual development). This makes me wonder what kind of resources are *already* dedicated to fight climate issues. I know that in EU there is a lot of focus on recycling, sustainability, and green energy. China is going green energy big time. Any other? What makes the biggest impact in practice? (IMHO, 100% dedication is naive; it won't happen).

@screwlisp@gamerplus.org @marcoxa@mastodon.social @mdhughes@appdot.net @me The constant (often redundant) type checking in Elisp is one of the bottlenecks for performance. It is necessary to avoid runtime crashes on C level, and type optimizations have a lot of potential here (IMHO). I think this area may benefit from input from someone familiar with compilers. I do not recall anyone apart from the author - Andrea Corallo who seriously works on these things in Emacs.

@vnikolov@ieji.de @screwlisp@gamerplus.org @bagder@mastodon.social @me This approach has many limitations, and https://github.com/polymode/polymode attempts to do more. But polymode is fragile. Emacs major mode system is not designed for such use. (There have been two feature requests in the past on emacs-devel for multiple major modes, but even the design of such support was not entirely clear)

Replying to
@screwlisp@gamerplus.org @publicvoit@graz.social There is no way we claim leadership on other implementations. The idea is to make it easier for projects outside Org/Emacs to keep the compatibility. Proper syntax specification is one idea. Another is standard testing suite for parsers.

It is hard to judge for me - I am exposed to every bug reported after each release, so my view is always biased. That said, we have a set of maintenance rules that are fairly conservative wrt breakage: https://orgmode.org/worg/org-maintenance.html#guidelines https://orgmode.org/worg/org-contribute.html#patch-review Ironically, we just had a breaking change to in org-babel-lob-ingest in Org 9.8 release. I do no like vim's hl to move left/right and re-bound it to io. So, I have jkio instead of jkhl. Naturally, that also gives up to move to the beginning/end of line, so that uiop are all about moving horizontally. Freeing up l also allow it to be bound to scrolling. For editing, I use M-, not C-. But my editing needs are mostly about moving things around (like Org hierarchy), not deleting.

@paniash@mstdn.social @tarsius@fosstodon.org @minad@mastodon.world @oantolin@mathstodon.xyz Yes and no. Boon does not shadow Emacs bindings - they all continue to work. So, I can still do, say, C-x C-f (or even c f in boon). Also, boon disables editing bindings in special modes, so that even more original bindings do work. For the few remaining movement keys, I do define bindings separately.
