Another small thing I realized is being taken away by AI. Insignificant in the big picture, but still another AI killjoy.
When my kids and I see handwritten text, we try to see if it was a font or true lettering. I'd point out if letters were exactly the same, or if perhaps alternates might be at play. If not, it was probably lettering. A fun little game to play with so many letters around us in the real world.
But AI today seems to make its own "lettering" when generating text in an image. And this adds enough irregularities in the letters to make it seem like handmade lettering. The initial joy of "hey cool, they took the effort to craft something" is now being extended by "...or is this AI generated". I don't like it.
Another clever little novely font: "Jim's TrueType QR Code Font" turns text into a QR code.
I noticed the QR code is broken in Safari when a space is used. This is because Safari treats the space character differently, seemingly ignoring the metrics or advance width, resulting in a shifted QR code (top line).
I quickly hacked the font to use the § character as an alias for space, and then it works (bottom line)
I wonder if this causes more problems in fonts, or if the space character is so simple that a browser messing with its metrics is inconsequential?

☝️ This is precisely what I've done, and what I've seen my webdev peers do *so* often!
I'm curious to see how Fontstand will tackle this. Keeping an eye on this.

Wakamai Fondue got featured on Jectives Typography News!

🤫 I just fixed a super embarrassing oversight in how I used name table IDs to show the font's name.
This little bug was there forever and so in-your-face that I became blind to it.
Refresh your fondue and it'll report the PROPER name!
