Another year of stunning growth, though not sure that 2m tall #tomatoes and their attending side shoots is the preferred presentation... #gardening

Cat just walked across the keyboard, so I might have favorited/boosted/blocked a bunch of people in the span of three seconds... more reasons for keyboard shortcuts to include at least one modifier key!

Back on my #TileRummy investigation: does this style of lettering evoke any particular decade? Perhaps copied from a specific decorative alphabet? It’s more elaborate than expected, especially compared to those E-for-effort Jolly Jokers. We expect pre-1930 tiles to be less standardized in appearance, but there have also been artisanal sets after the period, made for personal use and cruder in appearance.

First time composting in the backyard, and this bin (started about a year ago) turned out brilliantly. A sample after sifting.

@JTDType The current names are only confusing insofar as I would have guessed Display is the largest opsz, and would not be sure about the ordering of Tiny vs Micro. I was thinking maybe something like the below as a mnemonic for the design concept, without it suggesting actual, absolute optical sizes? Enfilade 16x Enfilade 8x Enfilade 4x Enfilade 2x Enfilade 1x

Ooh, Sue Walker is publishing a book on Marie Neurath’s books for children, coming early next year with Bloomsbury. Looks like it’s going to be an instant classic!

Doing a little infrastructure refresh for llll.ro got me wondering: are there vocabularies, or other markup conventions, for marking up digitized books as to convey #semantics not covered by HTML? (As CSS hooks for now, but possibly doing more interesting things later). Recently bumped into #EPUB Structural Semantics Vocab, but curious if there are any other initiatives in this space (describing book parts) https://www.w3.org/TR/epub-ssv-11/

@darkling Yes, that seems to be the main argument against collocating alt text with the image. Additionally, it sounds impractical when the image is used in a multilingual context. @mwichary

@Cykelero apparently there are many opportunities on the printing pipeline to mess with the details, eg: https://www.reddit.com/r/indesign/comments/1h0eq4p/can_anyone_recommend_a_printer_that_outputs/

#WebAPI desideratum:

Intl.Segmenter(locale, { granularity: "linebreak-opportunity" })

Could be used to detect hyphenation support for a certain locale, experiment with justification, etc

@j9t@mas.to I believe CSS can be misused. Features that exist so that some things are possible in the appropriate context are used inappropriately, either intently or through ignorance: truncation (text-overflow), disabling user interactions (user-select, pointer-events), and other user-hostile touches. It’s interesting to think about how mitigation at the browser level could look like.

Is it known which approximate year saw the debut of Fonderie Olive’s Cheltenham, Américaines Nouvelles? 1896 sounds anachronistic (Trying to place this flyer in a decade.)

Is there a synth patch/VST named that, or is it just a coincidence that Rone’s La Marbrerie and The Knife’s Marble House use a similar hihatish pattern?

@Cykelero Recently got one for the in-laws and and can attest it has been a smooth experience so far, with good looking prints, so it’s definitely on the list. I think there was discussion over genuine vs. emulated PostScript support, and whether it matters in practice. Also some brands that were less familiar.

@j9t@mas.to Yep, agreed. Outside of probably a “dirty dozen” or so properties that should be handled with care (i.e. which produce bad outcomes when misused, and which I would personally consider “wrong CSS”), I don’t care very much for absolutes in terms of style. As you say, if it gets the job done…
