The lineup for the first The Web You Want conference is complete, and tickets can be grabbed. Very, very much looking forward to seeing ALL of you there. There will be talks by @marleenstikker@waag.social, by @hdv@front-end.social, by @html5test@front-end.social and more!
Last Friday we hosted the first The Web You Want event. I wrote down some thoughts:
Had a wonderful time at The Web You Want. I loved the speakers, their topics: the seriousness, the fun, the unexpected subjects, and the weirdness.
Thanks to my students for their fantastic work, and thanks to @marleenstikker@waag.social, @hdv@front-end.social, Sanne Peters, Justus Sturkenboom, and @html5test@front-end.social for their excellent talks, and thanks to all visitors for visiting!
The event in June is not sold out yet.
Just now @astridpoot@mastodon.social pointed me at this post by @ruari@velocipederider.com about the Japanese “30 hour system.”
I still had this web version of a digital clock laying around, so I turned it into a 30 hour clock (which is only really interesting to look at between midnight and 6 o’clock in the morning)
This oklch colour picker is the most fantastic colour picker I’ve ever seen.

And it’s just a single 75 KB HTML file. The install process in the readme is excellent as well.
I made a version of the Literary Clock that only uses quotes that tell the time in vague terms.

(Most quotes are in Dutch, many in English, a few in Greek, and one in German. The language attribute should change, so I assume it works with a screenreader as well)
A fungus in our garden
I found a good chatbot.
I just received a wonderful email that started with “Actually, wait a minute…”
In the slow process of moving away from apple, I switched phones. I now use a delightfully clumsy Mudita Kompakt.
There is so much to say about The Web You Want, the event we hosted last Friday, but I decided to write just about the bad web, the better web, the fun web and about the thoughtful web.

If you wrote about the event on your own site, please let me know and I’ll link to it.
The Web You Want is almost sold out. If you want to join anyways you are allowed to sneak in, of course.
It’s on the ninth floor of the Kohnstamm building. Looking forward to seeing you all there this afternoon.
Tickets for The Web You Want (day 2) are going steady. You can grab your free ticket as well, before they’re all gone.
I really like the program, to me it looks as promising as day one. I’ll try to finalise the schedule this week.
Added quite some new pictures to the Pix Clock.
You can grab your — free! — tickets for The Web You Want on the 17th of April right here.
Ik ben zojuist medestander geworden van The Firewall, omdat ik weiger toe te kijken hoe techgiganten onze democratie ondermijnen.
I added a few clocks to my clocks page. I will try to keep it updated.
It now shows the clocks in a truly unordered list.
My colleague Justus Sturkenboom published his philosophical reflection on the words “The, web, you” and “want”. It is a text only version of the brilliant talk he gave at The Web You Want.
To font-feature-settings: "ss03" or not to font-feature-settings: "ss03", that’s the question.
Does anyone know where I can buy plain epubs of american books here in europe? So no amazon, and no adobe drm, just plain epubs that I am allowed to use however I want.
Just 15 places left for The Web You Want, tomorrow.
The Fakultät Design at the HAW in Hamburg is looking for a Professur für das Lehrgebiet „Typografie“. Sounds like a nice Vollzeitstelle for someone at typo.social.

I’m creating a workshop to teach my students some basics about CSS. Absolute beginners. The goal is to give them a few tools/insights/tricks with big impact: when they use those tricks their websites will not be ugly, and maybe even nice.
For instance, simple things like `max-width: 30em;` for text, or `color-scheme: light dark;` or powerful selector stuf like `:nth-of-type(2n)`.
Any ideas?
Are there modern computer screens that emit no light when they display black pixels?
