First hike after weekends of rain: Mnt. Sekiro.
Including HAM equipment, but I did not receive a single other station on the various bands I tried, and also I was not heard - checked afterwards on the internet.
I'll have to consider a better antenna. After the 1.6m telescope one, next best would be a wire antenna, but then one also needs trees for support, and equipment to get the antenna into the tree in the first place.

🇩🇪 -> 🇯🇵: Born in East Germany, living in Japan
I had read about it, but yesterday met the first Japanese
referring to ChatGPT (and even AI in general) as チャッピー ("Chappie").
Europe did see a hot and dry summer. Here in Japan/Kanto area, the summer was not as hot as last years, and due to the stronger El-Niño we have much more rain than usual, and now in this season more taifuns than usual.
Had a chat with a friend yesterday, the one I've visited by bike to help rice planting:
- rice harvest was not particularly bad for him, but catching a sequence of dry days for harvest was hard
- his さといも/Taro plants have been twice as high as normal
- fish catching has changed

Eine feine Folge, danke!
Zu Meshcore/tastic wollte ich noch den Cardputer mit LoRamodul erwaehnen, ein paar Details sind hier:
https://blog.fluxcoil.net/2026/05/cardputer-for-lora-mesh-and-more/ .
Zu Doom, das wurde neulich auch auf den C64 portiert, vielleicht ist auch der XZspectrum dann nicht fern:

TIL: There is Amiga Unix, and recently it's seeing a revival with new hardware getting supported. Details on https://amigaux.org/ .
If you have supported hardware, #NetBSD is also a good candidate, of course.

Interessantes Raetsel!
Wer in der Naehe wohnt, allein schon aufdecken was es ist duerfte interessant werden.
Chaos vibes at the Tokyo Hackerspace, where we played with meshtastic/core this week.
Last time I went here, it was in the old location, for 3D-printing the dongle needed to boot Linux on the Nintendo Switch.
I wonder, how is everybody consuming #Mastodon ?
- Full catch up: Want to see it all. After being offline/sleeping etc, I scroll back to see all new toots
- By chance + notify: Just reading what the app/browser shows, not scrolling back. Additionally notify activated to catch all toots from select people.

I got a used MacBook Air M1, for use as portable desktop and for HAM activities from parks and summits.
These are down to 5万円/350$, and in general used hardware here in Japan is in excellent condition.
Of course I'm using Fedora Asahi Remix on the system. Gave KDE again a try.. but #sway it is for me, again.
The procedure to encrypt the SSD has changed considerably, I captured it in this article: https://blog.fluxcoil.net/2026/05/fedora-asahi-remix-with-LUKS-encryption-in-2026/

It's a bit hard to reach, but I finally made it to the 首都圏外郭放水路/Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel:
the worlds largest water discharge facility, built to prevent the Tokyo area from getting flooded after heavy rainfalls.
As part of the tour, one gets to visit the huge hall.

The Microcomputer museum in Oume is nice.
Also some systems prepared for use by visitors, for example to type in program listings from old magazines.
@codewiz@mstdn.io was around with multiple Amigas, the museum event calendar listed him as 'Amiga様'. 😀

Great idea to present the Goryōkaku in Hokkaido/Japan.

I finally got around to write about the various rabbit holes around #HAMradio which I got aware of.
And probably also forgot a few. :)

SpaceX? Nah, here we have Spacia X [trains]!
Going back after a day at the Toshogu Shrine in Nikko.
The #Fediverse at it's best:
a Fediverse citizen from Europe could not get a ticket for a concert here, I was not sure if buying a single ticket would end up with the ticket bound to my name. Ended up with 2 tickets, going myself - to a group I had never heard of!
Great event, civilized and head banging folks. No pictures allowed at the concert, a good policy.
If I was asked about the style, (fans, please don't kill me), it reminded me of the Matrix OST.
At the 'Gas Museum' Tokyo. They have a gas driven organ, a toaster and more.
Mrs. Reiche (Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, making Germany right now invest heavily into gas instead of renewables) would probably try to move in here..
There is not only a list of Tokyo's design manholes at https://www.gesui.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/pr/kouhou/designmanhole , but also a map at https://ekikaramanhole.whitebeach.org/ext/manholecard/map/ .
Neat!
Iron Maiden is coming to Yokohama in November *ticketclick*
I'm always puzzled that there seem to few tech/ham events around Tokyo.. but Bunkasai6 event on Sunday was nice.
Folks showing morse decoders and all kinds of self built gear.
Saw a nice idea promoted: foxhunt with bluetooth! The beacon can be ESP32 based, for hunting an iOS app is existing. Not sure if the iphone sensor is helping with identifying the right direction.. but usable without any license!
Bunkasai7 is in November: https://scrapbox.io/denpa/bunkasai

TIL: In Post-War Japan, the United States Used Quiz Culture to Help Democratize the Country

Interesting fnord:
Many know that Japan had occupied Manchuria, it was operating as own region called 満洲国/Mansyukoku.
In 2019, people who call themself "exile government of Manchuria" founded again the "Country Mansyukoku".
