There are plenty of places to go to read smart independent pundits looking at #CanPol from the outside; but if you want to learn what MPs and other insiders of the Liberal party think, then go read the *Toronto Star*. Similarly, this article in the #NationalPost tells you how the #CPC feels about their prospects at the moment. In a word: bleak. And with no real solutions. https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/conservatives-search-for-hope-amid-mark-carneys-tide-of-good-fortune-and-find-only-stoicism 1/2 #CanPol #cdnpoli

I have a classic Canadian #roadtrip planned this Summer, en famille. I'm thinking of preparing a songbook to occupy the hours. What songs should I include? *Northwest Passage*, of course; that goes without saying. *Wheat Kings*. *Take Me Home, Country Roads*. *Song for the Mira*... Suggestions (and boosts) would be very welcome. #Canada

@NMBA@mstdn.ca @dyckron@cosocial.ca You and I both know that many notable Albertans weren't born there — but it's the sort of place where you can be accepted as "one of us" despite your origins from outside. That's one of the good things about #Alberta (and about Canada). (Messier, I had forgotten, actually is a native Albertan.) If we're lucky, the separatists will start complaining that people not born there are fake Albertans, thereby alienating many.

  1. You don't persuade people of things by arguing with them; instead, you get them feeling a certain way, then provide them with arguments as a rationale for doing what they'd now like to do.

@dyckron@cosocial.ca Uh huh. "Read on paper, his remarks sound conciliatory, balanced, even statesmanlike. They are also almost total bunk." Surprise, surprise, the Star's angle is that Conservatives are bad, rather than asking what is the right way to convince Albertans who might vote "yes" to choose "no". Would it really benefit the "no" side to say that the referendum is nonsense based on conspiracy theories, or to pick a fight with Premier Smith? #CanPol #cdnpoli #abpoli

People seem to love short-form video, I don't think there's much lock-in to current platforms, and Loops is a serious attempt to do TikTok, but better. Of course, many people like things as is; I trust they'll still be able to find instances that suit them, even if the Fediverse becomes much more popular.

@virtuous_sloth@cosocial.ca @mhoye@cosocial.ca I do think that government has a role to play in markets with regulation and with encouraging competition — I can't believe the feds let Rogers buy Shaw. But is it really the case that businesses naturally grow and consolidate power indefinitely? I see rather a process of churn; of growth, health, decline and replacement. It's easy to see in tech, but even in retail it's true: Remember Eaton's? Sears? Where are the founding companies of the Dow? https://www.dogsofthedow.com/djdelete.htm

  1. Immigrants to Alberta. Often in Canada immigrants are more patriotic than the native-born, but sometimes they're less likely to vote. Appeal in the newspapers they read and the shows they watch to stand up for the Maple Leaf.

I write mostly in terms of advertising, but big speeches, door-knocking and GOTV have an important role to play as well. Federalists should always be respectful.

@NMBA@mstdn.ca The #NationalPost has never posed as a neutral source of news. It was created to offer a #conservative perspective on Canadian affairs, and so it naturally endorses conservative parties. See https://www.readthemaple.com/election-endorsements/ If you disagree with conservative ideas in general, that might be frustrating, but I think we come closer to the truth when opposing opinions debate. @dyckron@cosocial.ca @pinhman@humanwords.party Nah. The CPC correctly identified that the major problem with the cost of living crisis is housing prices, and that the housing is so expensive because the Canadian government had been letting in people faster than we had been new housing. They proposed a two-fold solution for housing: reduce immigration numbers to what they had been prior to the Trudeau ministry, and force municipalities to allow more building by taking away federal funds from slow-building municipalities.

Their editorial line hasn't really changed, supporting normal #conservative policies like free trade, rule of law and NATO, unlike the Trump Administration. 1. First, the people who are thinking of voting yes, not because they really favour separation, but because they want to deal with Ottawa "un couteau à la gorge", because they think Alberta has been disrespected, because they disliked Justin Trudeau, etc.

@virtuous_sloth@cosocial.ca I don't think that's an inherent feature of capitalism at all. Short term thinking may incline you to growth at all costs; in long term thinking you realise you're probably shooting yourself in the foot by doing something socially undesirable. Enron, for instance, made money for lots of people until it went bust, and some of its managers went to prison. But not all businesses or investors are like Enron. 1/2 @mhoye@cosocial.ca
