@danirabbit@mastodon.online Conversely, it’s incredibly easy to get swept up in the “I’m gonna do good!” thought and bite off more than you can chew. You see it with folks who get into privacy all the time; they actually MAKE the huge switches, get completely burnt, then go back to how they were feeling defeated. Moderation isn’t just good advice those nervous to make big changes. It’s also a good mentality for those who want it all, but might forget that that doesn’t mean all at once.

@Casey@theforkiverse.com @kevin@theforkiverse.com @pj@theforkiverse.com To that end, when y’all say you want “more growth,” remember that on Fedi, growth isn’t just vertical (getting more users) but also horizontal (getting more activity from users on federated servers). Forkizens (as I saw @Snobleden007@theforkiverse.com offer up!) might have a good time seeing what else the larger Fediverse has to offer, like art at mastoart.social, or news on journa.host, or more!

@dansup@mastodon.social You’re building way too many things at once… Loops only just hit the public, and then you were supposedly working on Sup, and now you’re doing something else? Like the passion is awesome but this feels like an infrastructural level of feature creep. Every project you (and anyone) have always has points of improvements, especially with only one primary developer, and you’re just chasing the next shiny thing. This isn’t focus or growth, this is a lack of clear goals.

@whvholst@eupolicy.social @frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org 24K€ to Railsworld, DHH’s alternative Ruby conference because the original decided to cut ties with him, as of March of this year. That’s the equivalent of ~2.5 years of donations to KDE—an org that develops a DE that would run *on their laptops*—in one single donation. So, yeah…

@rolle@mementomori.social @dansup@mastodon.social While true, allowing yourself to neglect projects that you’ve built in the past and are still not complete (because FOSS projects never are…) AFTER they’ve had time to become a part of users’ social infrastructure is a massive exercise in shirked responsibility. And lending a hand becomes less tenable when the maintainer who will ACCEPT those lended hands is spreading himself thin across multiple projects; one man can only approve so many PRs.

@rolle@mementomori.social @dansup@mastodon.social Frankly, I have no issue with Dansup starting a lot of projects, especially when they’re thematically interrelated. I have an issue with him starting them alone. There’s been no word about organized teams and collective maintainers being deployed to any of his numerous projects, such that he could take on the role of “vision lead” while well-capable programmers support the groundwork he’s laid. Delegation needs to happen when you scale this fast.

An incredible Costa Rican Spanish-to-American English translation, courtesy of @kagihq’s translation app. Bonkers. For those who don't speak Spanish, the terms "mae," "brete," "cabra," "al chile," maybe "fijo," "pedir cacao," "güila," "legal," and "manda huevo" are all deeply Costa Rican terms. I don't have any issues with any of the translations they used. Pa que los gringos ya no nos estorban, @donelias 😂

@godotengine@mastodon.gamedev.place Do you guys have a donation nag? Both KDE and GNOME use a yearly(?) donation nag and it seems to do wonders for their monthly sustainability; maybe implementing a similar feature on version updates can help boost monthly donations to what they were about a year ago!

@mirkobrombin@mastodon.social What’s the motivation for the project? It looks pretty cool, but historically your work has had a specific reason to be developed. Bottles to improve the Wine experience on Windows, Bottles Next to fix the architecture of Bottles and improve its UX (also, any news on Next?), cpak for a portable and sandboxed package format… so I’m curious as to the perceived issue that led to this project being born!

@MSFCPaul@theforkiverse.com @Zoonpolitikon@theforkiverse.com On your Home Screen, tap the “Home” section at the top to view settings; select “Local Timelines”; go to “Add a local timeline”; enter the URL for the instance of interest (I use journa.host as an example), and add it; when you open Local Timelines again, you’ll see it. Tapping it will put you in the local, unfederated timeline for that instance!

@Zoonpolitikon@theforkiverse.com It’s likely that much of the Forkiverse isn’t following too many non-Forkiverse accounts, and thus, not getting federated posts into the Forkiverse itself, i.e. posts that are tagged. Once you (or other Forkizens) start following people from a variety of servers, those hashtags should start working a bit better! So, one thing you could do is check out some Fediverse instance lists, or Fedi.garden, to find some instances to peruse locally. Good luck! 2/2

Nonetheless, the internet is great at making it super difficult to glean character from <400 character posts, and already provides too small a window frame to understanding one another at all. So, I'll be muting this thread, but if we interact further elsewhere, I'd take to more constructive criticism a bit better!

But Daniel’s established that his priority is to support the Fediverse by building strong platforms for it; vision dissonance takes time away from working on the software that thousands of Fedizens now depend on, which runs in contradiction to his OWN priorities. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

Even if you ignore the ethically distasteful optics, it doesn’t even make sense from an ecosystem standpoint.

@Casey@theforkiverse.com Well, as an example, most Mastodon servers now support quote-posting, including yours (based on the Mastodon version y’all are running). If y’all find posts on Fedi at large that you like, or feel “fit the Forkiverse vibe”, you could quote-post them to direct Forkizens to other parts of the Fediverse they might not have found on their own! Then your Forkizens get to experience a “growth” of their community without it costing you guys that much more moderation overhead.

Would anyone happen to know if there’s a #FOSS alternative to #Partiful? Some tool that allows for #party and/or #event #planning that, most importantly for my age demographic, supports SMS as a link-sharing tool. I looked at #mobilizon, but it seems they only support email notification (besides Fedi, naturally.)

Feel free to boost if you think someone that follows you might know!

@urlyman@mastodon.social @joborg@mastodon.social I think that might be a culture thing. The kind of people Fedi attracts are those who are very intentionally trying to use social media as a way to connect with others (I think the instance architecture serves itself well to this, what with an initial common interest). Bluesky has always been billed as “the Twitter alternative,” where you can take your blasé attitude about digital presence with you and continue operating with it.

@benroyce@mastodon.social There's been a miscommunication! I didn't intend to be patronizing or "bossy," my intent was only to point out what I feel might be overdiversification before setting up a strong team of builders—which is a goal that Daniel himself has actually expressed in the past! Just a, "hey, this is cool, but please make sure you're still working on the base you've established for yourself." Whether Daniel agrees or not, up to him! As a proponent of Fedi, I simply wanted to voice one opinion.

@rolle@mementomori.social In fairness, having <500 characters to express an opinion makes it easy for me to express the wrong voice 😅 And you're right, open source is absolutely about experimentation! What I was hoping to point out was that the goals he's setting out for himself usually involve huge teams of people (Mastodon alone is an entire non-profit), and are altruistic in nature; FOSS can already lead to burnout on its own, and I wary of burnout when you run two entire social platforms, and then add more.

They’ve brought 10k new accounts in on the instance!

@TheEvilSkeleton@social.treehouse.systems Maybe @mirkobrombin@mastodon.social and I are misattributing GNOME’s vision for its ecosystem to its vision for the shell. Naturally the shell can’t be going LibAdwaita-only, as (looking from the outside in) I would figure many shell elements, like widgets/the dock/etc, are just using GTK4—not to mention non-LibAdwaita apps still run on it. The ecosystem is what seems to be going LibAdwaita-only, both in GNOME shell, and elsewhere. I figure?

@Casey@theforkiverse.com That is to say, making the Forkiverse a part of the Fediverse would mean BEING on the Forkiverse is a social experience that goes beyond “the people here listen to podcasts I like,” into “the people here are people I vibe with” territory. So when people elsewhere on Fedi see @ theforkiverse.com in a username, they might think, “oh yeah, those guys are cool!” And vice versa. Kinda like how a floss.social user (me) might make people think, “oh, he must like open source!”

Sometimes, you NEED to use proprietary tech. You never NEED to use AI.

@urlyman@mastodon.social I was under the impression that Bluesky was also only chronological feeds? I think one thing contributing the “connectivity” on Fedi is just that there are so few people here. Bluesky has somewhat hit mainstream awareness; once your platform hits millions of DAU, it’ll be hard to make yourself “stand out” in a sea of hundreds of thousands of daily posts, regardless of there being an algorithm or not.

@lina With how capitalistic and corporatist tech has gotten, if you decide that tech just isn’t where your heart can be, I couldn’t blame you. Sometimes it suffices to find people IRL—like, people you can do coffee and picnics with—that see the world the way you see it. I have people in my life that I can go dancing with, sing karaoke with, have dinner with, all of whom care deeply about ethical tech. It’s not everyone out there, but it reminds me of why I care about the things I do.

@rysiek@mstdn.social I don’t find it wild at all. Disappointing? Yes. Frustrating? Absolutely. But most media organizations are run by for-profit companies. Adsense, user analytics, targeted popups and banner ads, all of that goes away in an RSS feed, and the revenue it generates gets lost, too. On top of all that, most people don’t even know what RSS is. People get their news from social media, or aggregators like Apple News that FUNCTION like RSS readers, which is good enough for many.
