Open Source Club at OSU

March 25th is #DocumentFreedomDay! In appreciation of the work that @dff@fosstodon.org and @tdforg@fosstodon.org do for the free software ecosystem, we invite everyone to crack open @libreoffice@fosstodon.org Impress and take part in the Open Source Club's #TemplateaThon2026!

While the competition aspect of the Template-a-Thon will be limited to members of OSC here at OSU, we encourage those in the F/LOSS community at large to make all the OPT templates they can.

We just had our first Installfest and it was a great success! Students explored different Linux distros, got hands-on with demo machines, and received help installing Linux on their own systems. We celebrated three successful Fedora installations (including my own!) and are excited to support our new Linux users :D. Thank you to everyone who attended!

IT’S HERE!!

Join us in the Houston Grove Room this Sunday at 3:00 for our first ever #InstallFest! Coming just before the @Endof10@floss.social, this is a great opportunity to see what #Linux operating systems can do for you. It’ll also be a great way to expose yourself to more private, sovereign, and democratically-developed software that doesn’t sacrifice on your agency for usability. We hope it to be the first of many!!

No matter what development path you decide on, Linux will be at the heart of a lot of software work you do! A piece of open-source software itself, Linux and its associated tools and ecosystem are crucial as a programmer, and dipping your toes into the Linux waters is a great early step into becoming a developer within the open source ecosystem. We'll see y'all on Nov. 4 at 7:00 in Enarson 211!

A big thank-you to @keila@fosstodon.org for allowing OSC to have professional-grade newsletters, without sacrificing on our commitment to open source! Philipp was incredibly patient and helpful as we worked to set up the infrastructure around it, and our org. is much better for it. 👏👏

RE: @osc_at_osu@floss.social

At OSC, the Template-a-Thon is intended to end on the 7th of April, coinciding with a meeting time where members are encouraged to show off their presentation template in the form of a lightning talk. Members of the community are free to adhere to this date, or to the 25th proper, or simply the month of March—or as long as they'd like! More templates is always fruitful, and will help make the open ecosystem that much more appealing to potential newcomers.

As finals get closer, there's no better way to let off some steam than with some healthy competition. Come join OSC this Tuesday 12/09 from 7-8 PM in Enarson 211 for open-source Jeopardy.
Snacks and drinks provided as usual!

We had our second community branch meeting this week and had such a wonderful time discussing our relationship with technology, specifically with social media, and how we each have been amending this relationship through adopting FOSS alternatives. Thank you to everyone who pulled up and stay tuned for more awesome meetings 😎😎😎😎.
