My children are asking what six-seven means, and all I’m giving them is a discourse on the Dadaists and the vital role alienation plays in modern and contemporary art.

Finally finished decommissioning a system so I can convert it to file server use and replace my badly underpowered synology. I had been thinking of TrueNAS Core, but I’d like to see how far https://daemonless.io gets me, and that’s just easier in #FreeBSD 14+.

@dougmerritt I really wish we’d gotten the future where terminal emulators kept improving (like acme over rc) and shells didn’t have to add interactive features alongside syntactic capabilities. But most people don’t know what I mean when I say that modern shells are extremely powerful line editors, while every other line editor is dead.

I wonder when people are going to start writing about the opex implications of train and inference clusters. I get that the capex story is hilariously full of vendors in buyers’ pockets, depreciation forecast comedy and cost predictions that seem willfully blind to subsidized prices.

But comparisons to dot-com-bubble black fiber seem to ignore that a pipeline full of glass strands has totally different upkeep than an air-cooled building full of A100s in Phoenix.

Like everyone, I love unsolicited, general purpose business advice. Especially if it’s unrelated to my expertise, market and toolset. Bonus points if it’s indistinguishable from general purpose self-help.

@aworkinglibrary The challenge, as with everything, is at the margin. Do you refuse to review the junior employee’s PR because you can’t tell if the errors are human or machine? Refuse to engage with the email from the person who doesn’t natively speak your preferred language? Do you stick AI poisoning snippets in to forms that will also confuse screen readers? And if you do engage, does that leave the crack of incentives open for slop at the margins? This is so exhausting.

@b0rk@social.jvns.ca @TheAlgorythm@chaos.social The crashes are literally the only thing keeping me from adopting it for non-trivial use. That plus the lack of any crash recovery equivalent to vi in 1979: https://github.com/helix-editor/helix/issues/290 I’m really frustrated I’m not good enough at rust to implement this, but more frustrated that it’s not a priority for the maintainers.

@dhw@infosec.exchange @k8em0@infosec.exchange I’ve been disappointed with myself at how little of the bucket list I’ve attempted since becoming full-time remote in 2014. But it’s still a lot more than I’d have accomplished chained to a corporate office.

@k8em0@infosec.exchange I’d write software criticism analyzing not just the algorithms and data structures (aka structuralist critique), but the social context that led to it, it’s social impact (aka Marxist critique), the psychological and emotional aspects of the work (aka Lacanian critique), it’s meaning without or in radically unintended contexts (Derrida) and most importantly how these change across time and with the influence of changing authorship.

@whitequark@mastodon.social Oh, so that’s why every time I go into that codebase I get lost in refactorings that end up nowhere because I’m to terrified of the risks and know no one will be able to validate the correctness of a change by looking merely at a patch diff or individual file code reviews.

And contemplating the dev months of mandatory “preventative actions” from a learning event if another major incident comes from that one file in that codebase.

@dhw@infosec.exchange @k8em0@infosec.exchange Right? I get to have lunch with my kids. I get to go to dinner immediately after my last meeting. I get to have a fully functioning workspace with all my favorite tools when I have to be on-call. I get to be here for contractors, deliveries, errands instead of stuck in the city. Wow, I’m appreciating a lot of food related benefits. But cooking and eating good food makes me happy!

My standard for cleaning is very simple. I don’t want guests and neighbors to remember the movie “Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead” exists.

Skimming dot-com bubble design sites for inspiration, and this feels like a quintessential alistapart: https://web.archive.org/web/20011124013952/http://www.alistapart.com/index.html

Reading Design, Dean Allen
With so many specialists working so hard at their craft, why are so many pages so hard to read? Unabashed text enthusiast Dean Allen thinks designers would benefit from approaching their work as being written rather than assembled.

@justin@beige.party @writingcooperative@me.dm I can’t seem to find it any more, but there was long ago an article digging into a big a/b test that found something like “click to follow me on twitter” had the highest conversion rate. It made me really annoyed, because that is not how I want the web to be.

@whitequark@mastodon.social Fortunately, I don’t have to use my political capital to advocate for it in this year’s roadmap budgeting/planning, I can let one of the more senior folks advocate for it. /me looks around to discover I somehow am most senior member of the team now. Crap. This is going to involve trauma.
