@sarajw @mhoye On that note, I recently learned about how the original group of ENIAC programmers were all women. One of them is credited with having invented the debugger breakpoint.

@darkuncle@infosec.exchange @paul_ipv6@infosec.exchange I trace it back to the Telecommunications Act of 1996. So *thirty* years, not twenty.

@tzimmer_history Yeah, that is totally not an answer to “Why only now and not before? Or later?” Proof that your interlocutors are not engaging with the central point, and they are engaging with something tangential. Maybe whatever it is they want to engage with is interesting, maybe not, but it doesn’t sound like they are prepared to do it.

@GeePawHill I suspect the next stop is to reverse Lawrence and then go after Griswold. They’ll probably avoid eviscerating the 13th amendment because it already has the exploit they need written into it from the start.

@smerp I regret to inform you that caching negative responses is a critical feature of the protocol if you want any link with a non-trivial number of hosts on it to have any bandwidth left after handling all the mDNS traffic.

@smerp All I can tell you is that every last damned weird bullshit thing about mDNS-SD is there because a) people refused to adopt SLP and b) mDNS-SD as bad as it is was still better than LLMNR. You may think it's doing weird shit that makes no sense, but I assure you if it were different, then there would be insanely weird cascading failures attributed to it that would get everything trying to use it banned. I was there when it was in development, and I tried to stop them, but the basic logic of mDNS-SD could not be stopped. It is what it is because nothing better had supporters with money, and it was the least bad thing that could actually be deployed. https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc2608

RFC 2608: Service Location Protocol, Version 2

The Service Location Protocol provides a scalable framework for the discovery and selection of network services. Using this protocol, computers using the Internet need little or no static configuration of network services for network based applications. This is especially important as computers become more portable, and users less tolerant or able to fulfill the demands of network system administration. [STANDARDS-TRACK]

@brouhaha Responding to alerts about recent bad changes in velocity with dismissive remarks about position is lazy. It can still come to suck so much worse if the velocity is not reversed soon.

@js@mastodon.nl @altim@mastodon.nl Not to mention La Amistad. By which I mean to say there were a lot of people in the USA in the 1930s who it is fair to say were not living in any kind of haven from fascist terror.

@karlauerbach@sfba.social I too was deeply demoralized when even the SF League Of Pissed Off Voters went so far as to give him a very grudging endorsement as a tactical vote. Like, seriously not gonna lie to you: if it’s really a choice between November having no Democrats on the ballot or November being a choice between that motherfucker and some GOP panty sniffer, then I am legitimately undecided about which of those two options is worse.
