if you're trans, non-binary or afab and you make edm, electronica, noise, experimental -- any kind of wild/funky/hard/fast music or sounds -- put it online if you can. there's *so many dudes* and it's *so exhausting* trying to wade through "similar artists" to find music by other kinds of folks. the whole electronica genre seems to be like 95% dudes, it's possibly the worst of all art forms. your non cis-male voice is desperately needed.

some work on simulated plotter prints with one of my designs from 2023. the ink blending and sharp line edges are working well.

Halo Clock v2 weather forecast for today. temperate morning heading towards fucking hot around noon. (it's about 7:30 am on the clock as shown by the white hour hand marker)

i've got the plotter simulator pre-processor just about done. to portray ink you have to handle overlapping lines; they must be darker at the crossings. you even have to handle lines that overlap themselves, which requires a whole other level of geometric trickery. here's what it looks like when it works. the printer is producing some very nice output, also. i'm not pleased with the 32lb paper, which gets wrinkly with all the ink going down, so heavier paper is on the way

did it. the simulated halo is "live" at 4fps from the clock it's connected to. it's literally impossible to represent the full depth of colour from real leds, but at least you can see what's going on.

Well, I did it. This is a HALO clock with an op-art coffee fascia; the design goes right through the plastic, as you can see on the edges.

This combines so many of my favourite things. Op art, coffee, plotter-art, timekeeping...

I will include it in your order for free if you buy a HALO clock and ask for it. First come, first serve.

the mDNS issue seems to be licked. posting a full service advertisment (e.g. PTR, SRV and TXT) in addition to an A record seems to make macos happy. and i have a prototype file-based HTML templating engine that uses almost no ram, perfect for chips light on memory that want to serve some dynamic pages to a user or two locally. will share these things (all in micropython) once it all settles down.

also if you're me of three(!!!) days ago wondering what the fuck is going on with mDNS, here are some nice terminal commands tools for macos that will tell it to flush its cache, sudo dscacheutil -flushcache sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder and here's a real-time monitor of the cache dns-sd -G v4 [yourdevicenamehere].local if you needed these commands may god speed you on the rest of your your perilous journey

didn't work. the pointillist black filament didn't stick to the build plate very well at 55C. the test i did on the bambu labs a1 mini was better at 65C. it's science, though. negative results are just as important as positive ones.

I’m gluing the 60 LEDs into a larger clock prototype, HALO 2, and you can see it’s bigger because there’s an original HALO sitting fully inside it.

and there we go. a web page with a websocket open to an esp32 device on my network that is connected via uart to a halo clock that is almost instantaneously mirroring the OLED display on the back of the clock. i already have javascript code to inject events for button presses so the clock will react to button presses on the website just as it would on the clock itself. however, my brain is tired, and i need to stop. this is cool though.

after weeks of work it feels anticlimactic, but the final hookup of buttons on the browser to event handler in the clock firmware was about five minutes of work.

the v2 version of halo clock will let you interact directly with the clock's screen and buttons from a web browser (phone, desktop, etc) in real time.

(note that there are no v2 clocks to ship or sell as the hardware is still in prototype, and it's not an upgrade to current clocks as it requires a second microcontroller)

popular(?) micropython html templating library utemplate burns templated pages into .py files which are then imported... y'all. it might be fast on the execution, but they're permanently memory resident, and you can't regenerate them until you reboot the chip, because on micropython __import__ is forever. i feel like this should be mentioned in the documentation.

guess who now has to go off into the weeds to create a streaming micropython html template library that doesn't soak ram

the new 3d printer (snapmaker u1 with four printheads) and similarly new 4 reel automatic filament dryer (creality spacepi 4) are connected up via long tubes; the dryer is sitting on an ikea samla bin that serves as the printer's "hat"

Still here, still working on the “wifi coprocessor” for the halo clock. Small edge case bug fixed, now it is almost up to the functionality of a v1 clock.

okay well did you know your home network is literally screaming at itself all the time, like an angry possum, with every device saying "IM HERE" on the regular, but what is worse there are hosts out there saying "ARE YOU THERE? YOU WERE THERE TWO SECONDS AGO BUT WHAT ABOUT NOW, what about now, what about now?" to dozens of devices at once.

i did a little test of "embedded" plotter art via 3d printer, this is a variation of that coffee cup artwork as a 10cm / 2mm thick solid plastic drink coaster. the pattern goes all the way through.

the same idea can be extended to halo clock fascia and i'll do a trial print of a similar design tomorrow.

anyway part of the halo clock v2 enhancements includes replicating the clock's interface in a web browser in real time so you can play with its settings while it's on the wall. that includes rendering the oled display exactly as it appears, plus the three spiral flexure buttons. on one hand, it's cool, on the other hand, it means i don't have to duplicate any functionality. on the third hand, it sucks for affordances and accessibility, so there will need to be other ways to interact.

the bridging, the rpc, the co-processor, all of that is fun. trying to integrate it all with the current clock code and ensuring it still supports a variety of hardware and firmware types in the field is not fun. (the variety of hardware and firmware types in the field is already not fun, this is making it even less fun than that.)

i have just tested telling one microcontroller) which is not online) to update the software on another microcontroller (which is) by fetching a manifest file from a web server and downloading any deltas, one of which was a source file with a new remote procedure command, which was then dynamically loaded into the rpc command list, and then executed. i also told the second device via rpc to reboot, restoring it to a known state. and that seems pretty cool.

the "zero" memory footprint templating library, which seems to be called XTemplate, i don't know why, for micropython is running at about 1ms per line with heavy, heavy flow control, testing loops and conditionals. which is not tremendous on an esp32. if you write fizzbuzz with it, that's not what it's really for. it will spit raw text pretty fast.

if you want to serve templated html of arbitrary size on esp32 C3 connected by wifi which has fuckall ram and a lot of heap churn, it'll do it.

and macos does this incredibly stupid mdns caching of NEGATIVE RESPONSES, so instead of asking it just assumes if something was dead a minute ago that it will be dead again, for who knows how long. meanwhile the same operating system is screaming like an angry possum "ARE YOU THERE? ARE YOU THERE?" for every other imaginable homekit / airplay / iot device. but not mine. because fuck you, that's why.

the oled display simulation updates in real time unless there's backpressure from the "slow" uart connection and then it will drop waiting frames. this really only happens when you do something like hold a button down for a while and switch among themes and it is madly doing theme setup/teardown and there's not a lot of spare cycles for shipping frames out. but you don't notice the few missing frames, as soon as the backpressure lets up, the final, current frame is instantly displayed.

on this Trans Day of Visibility I am listening to Octo Octa, a transwoman producer who does upbeat, sparse, classic/retro techno/house with few if any vocals. give her a listen on your favourite platform, won't you?

(please feel free to reply to this post with your own favourite trans musician, so others can read the replies and discover some new and great sounds)

took apart the A1 plotter. it's was just getting kicked and jostled. haven't used it in at least a year. i was doing really well with plotter art for a couple years, then nfts fucked contemporary digital artists over, and then genai fucked over any art that had even a hint of a computer's touch. plus, with wars and late capitalism, no one has money anyway. i'm tired.

i still have the "little" A3 plotter on a table. last time it was used was addressing an envelope with a few prints in it.

@janxdevil it’s stupidly implemented then. The cache start time never gets updated even if the device readvertises, so it will age out instantly once the original ttl expires. And don’t talk to me about bandwidth when the Mac is constantly asking if other devices are there but silent, and ignoring ones that advertise politely. It’s bullshit.

HALO CLOCK owners, i am curious, if you could access your clock with a web browser while it was running, what would you want to do? Brainstorming.

with the larger, multi-head 3d printer, i can do larger clocks, and integrate the white reflectors into the black clock body. here's a 60 LED clock, just slightly larger than the usual 48 led clock. (it'll be black, not blue, that's just for visibility)

the template engine uses about 2.5k of dynamic ram while running, to put out arbitrary file sizes of possibly nested files. this includes 512 bytes of chunk buffer to keep it efficient. should be just fine in memory constrained situations. i need to make a better test suite and some documentation.
