"After all, what did you expect? I'm here as promised, if not as forseen" —Shelley Doty

“I can see by your coat, my friend, you’re from the Other Side. One thing I got to know, can you tell me please: Who won?” — CS&N

Things need not necessarily have happened to be true…

What kind of house do we live in?

The kazoo in the “small musical knick-knacks drawer” (1) sounded a little ratty, and R will need one for the music party tonight. So I went to check both kids’ rooms and immediately found, without lifting or opening anything, or even turning my head really, not one but two kazoos in each room. One plastic, one metal, because of course.

First order retrievability for kazoos.

That’s what kind of house we live in.

1) what do you mean you don’t have a small musical knick-knacks drawer?

It is 1990. My primary OS is Ultrix on my “Maxine” class Personal DECstation. I compile joe(1) from sources pulled from Usenet, and use it to configure my build of nethack 3.0.

It is 1996. My primary OS is SunOS4.x on a SPARCStation 1+. I build joe 2.8, and use it to configure my build of nethack 3.2

It is 2006. My primary OS is Gentoo Linux on a Franken-box of random hardware. The first thing I do once i have a working kernel is compile joe 3.0, and use it to configure my build of nethack 3.4.3 (all hail the king)

It is 2016. I have a Macbook Pro running El Capitan. I install joe (3.x? 4.x?) via homebrew, and use it to configure my build of nethack 3.6

It is 2026. I have a MacBook Air M2 running Tahoe. Joe version 4.8 is released in late April. I install it via homebrew, and use it to configure my build of nethack 5.0, released in early May.

IIRC nethack 3.0 took around 15-20 minutes to build on the DECStation’s R3000 CPU.

Nethack 5 built in about 15 seconds on the M2 chip (TTY mode only…working on errors in the ncurses build now).

My gaming consoles tell me I have spent thousands of hours playing (mostly) Katamari, Ratchet & Clank, Horizon, No Man’s Sky, and Clair Obscur over the years. But I bet I still have more cumulative time in nethack overall…

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social I was explaining to a co-worker how all these satellites are doing anti-collision maneuvers every 75 seconds, when he asked a question I don’t know the answer to: “How?” Maybe since they launch with a known lifecycle before re-entry/destruction, they have a small fuel source? Or something something gyroscopes? What’s the actual mechanism? #

Nethack 5.0 has been out for 10 days. I have YASD’d a good 30 adventurers so far (mostly because I am drawn to early-game weaklings like Tourists and Wizards, and I play with a foolish aggression that 36 years of playing has still not beaten out of me). The QoL improvements are fabulous. I’ve discovered a dozen new item types, and to my horror I’ve found a handful of nerfed mechanics that will make ascension even more difficult 😲

I love this. I will never tire of this ridiculous game.

Jesus Fuck, we have a new SVP and it's-- I know you will be shocked-- a white male hustle-culture dude. Clearly gets all of his self-worth from work, and loved his former company because nobody ever said to him “why are you calling me on a Sunday?”

It is funny to me— not funny-haha, but funny-bleargh-ptui— that the most reliable and properly designed and implemented feature in the entirety of Gmail is the “you forgot the attachment, you dumbass” pop-up.

So kudos to that one programmer, I guess?

Warm-water fishing season is right around the corner, so for the first time in 3 years I have updated the catalog of big predator flies on my shop champlainflyworks.com. There are some new flies! Including the ones I have been throwing about half the time lately, the “Houdini Glider”, a bulkhead variant of my own design that is alllllllllmost snag less and weedless. I have pulled these out of brush piles that would frustrate an otter, and gotten eats and follows that no other fly would enable.

I’ve already gotten one order, from a new customer who REALLY wants to chase giants…these 3 mega-changers (a Blane Chocklett design, which I tie with his kind permission) are all between 10-12 inches long and weigh about 11 grams each. A burly 11 or 12 weight fly rod is recommended!

Because people will ask: the first two are “normal", the second two, I was gifted eggs by a player with a heavily modded PC install. Those two exchanges may have been the only ~10 minutes I’ve had the game in multi-player in years. The dragon is just a new skin on a tameable flying creature (maybe even a beetle like in pic 2). The sky worm is an aquatic predator mapped to a tameable flying creature.

I have been on the record with my absolute disdain for the entire governing apparatus of the NCAA since I competed under their auspices in the 90s. But this 76 team March Madness bracket is a bullshit cash-grab abomination, holy shit.

Yes, it will dilute the possibility of Cinderella upsets, that's the true tragedy of it all, but it doesn't even parse as a bracket. All of the 16 and (upset-favorite) 12 seeds will be decided by a play-in game, but only two of the 11s and 15s? Two regions get two play-in games, the other two regions get four? That's worse, you see how that's worse, right? The blueprint for Selection Sunday shenanigans is right there on the page…

If you 1) are a podcast person, 2) can bear to wallow for 90 minutes in the clown show that is US foreign policy [sic] in the Middle East, the Weekly Show with John Stewart podcast from March 4, with Wendy Sherman (who negotiated the JCPOA) and Christiane Amanpour (who, TIL, is Iranian) is absolutely phenomenal. It covers a huge amount of ground, even if some of the speculation— and the polling mentioned— is already out of date. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-weekly-show-with-jon-stewart/id1583132133?i=1000753015964

@anticomposite@wikis.world @EdG@mastodon.social @simontatham@hachyderm.io Is there any form of humor more absolutely niche than IETF RFC jokes? Like these are for an audience of dozens…luckily we are all on Fedi. I was actually online on the morning of April 1, 1990 when the canonical example, “RFC 1149 - A Standard for the Transmission of IP Datagrams on Avian Carriers” dropped*, and it is deeply embedded in my headcanon Internet Timeline of Important Events. But I run into supposed industry professionals (even network and security admins!) who are completely unaware of this seminal document with alarming frequency. (*) the standard has since updated twice, once to add Quality of Service and once to add IPv6 support. A real world implementation was only partially successful, as latency and packet loss were substantial. The whole protocol is nerdvana and the commitment to the bit is exemplary… @

OK final NMS post of the day: not shown in the tally of total hours spent in this game are the half dozen or so Permadeath saves that all ended the exact same way: Fleeing a predator or sentinel, jetpacking safely away, then immediately falling juuuuuuuust a little too far into a cavern or hole or onto a sloped hillside and dying from impact damage. I never got a single Permadeath save up to 100 hours without this happening. It was almost Nethack-esue (“Nibbled to death by a pony, while helpless”).

“Why so many saves?” Well, see, it's ike this:

1. The 1,808 hour save is my original save, from late 2016. I was not a day 1 player, but close, it was on the Foundation patch when I started this save. This is the save where I joined the Galactic hub and Citizen Science division, helped out with the BONKERS Waking Titan ARG before Atlas Rises (iykyk), did a *lot* of exploration looking for Diplos and Mushroom Beetles, and weathered multiple galaxy resets. It's still, obviously, my daily player. Currently in Sudzerbal, the 30th galaxy; I crossed the first 10 in the course of the main storyline, helped found the Galactic Hub capital in Eissentam after the Next update, reached the center of the next few galaxies “the hard way” via black hole travel, then discovered the portal glitch and made my way to the next “Lush” galaxy, which landed me in Sudzerbal. This save features a Gek main character and an all-yellow color scheme (this was *way* more work a decade ago than it is now with custom ship building). I turned off crafting costs on this one when I hit MAXINT units 🤣 (Via an absolutely massive Activated Indium farm that gave me ~250M units every couple days, before they nerfed the rewards for Activated Indium).

2. The 711 hour save is from the Atlas Rises era, I split it originally to keep a save centered in Euclid near the Galactic Hub. "Pierced Shark Face” main character, black and white color scheme (white classic ships, black corvettes). This one got a lot of hours early in the Pandemic, when I went on a bit of a Living Ship and Base Building binge. This is the save where I glitch-built the Planetary Defense HQ for the G-Hub Coastal Colony on Dorinish (second pic), using several different techniques that are now patched out 🫠 Those are land-based circular base parts glitched to “float" on the water, and I've literally never seen another base built 100% on an angle like this (on the outside anyway…interior floors just REFUSED to snap to the diagonal plane). Funny: there are ladders on the main gun, but when you climb them, you go straight up even as the structure drifts further and further away from you.

3. The 296 hour save is just silly, I made it because the prettiest little teal (turquoise?) & yellow (pale orange?) E-wing single thruster Rasamama ship landed at one of my bases in the Euclid save. No joke, I started a new game, progressed it until I had all the portal glyphs, then jumped to the right planet to nab this ship and zoom off. I finished the main storyline in this save also, and the Gek MC is now hanging out in Eissentam. An older photo of the fleet (with the original Rasa in the bottom right) for this save is in the third pic; hunting down a Living Ship that was an acceptable fit for this color scheme took as long as any other single task in a decade of playing this game, ISTG. Also in this shot: my all time favorite Explorer variant, with eye-pods and chin plates, a ship which I managed to get to 3K light year warp distance before there were any such things as X-class mods.

4. The 70 hour save is Creative mode, from back before you could disable building costs in a custom save, and its whole reason for being was to experiment with glitch techniques without costs. Almost all of the time in this save was spent building and refining the Temple of the Eye in pic 4. Again built all kinds of glitch techniques that have been patched out, so it is "done” in practice if not in theory. A shame, because those holo-door rings are siiiick and big enough to fly a ship through; I never got around to building a ship agility course making use of these.

(the 16 hour save is just the most recent expedition)
