@jannem@fosstodon.org You appreciate really quickly why we added layers of abstractions. It's hard to appreciate these days how revolutionary COBOL and Fortran were when they came out and the opportunities it unlocked. But over time something was also lost. Like... I love working with serverless and lowcode and not having to think about the platform as much but I also worry about what gets taken for granted to make that all work and the amount of underlying infrastructure needed. And sometimes the most correct solution is a very small executable with minimal resource requirements that does small number of things, reliably, very well. @mttaggart@infosec.exchange

They said that about assembly

And you know what? We lost something for it. Back in the day, programs took into account the time the time it took for the drum to rotate back around so the next sector would be under the read head, and they were performant under constraints that today would be declared "impossible".

Like... we left the planet using computers less powerful than a Furby, and in no small part due to creativity and ingenuity of people who cared deeply about their work.

@CursedSilicon TFW a capacitor becomes a resistor, then, sort-of, a capacitor again.

@cassolotl Knobs were a requirement when we went induction; touch controls are often on the cooking surface itself which isn't great for a number of reasons that aren't just edge cases if you're an avid cook:

  • Wet hands (washing something and need to adjust quickly)
  • Something starts to boil over (and now you have to move the pot instead of turning down the heat because the touch area is wet)
  • A large pot or pan covering part of the control area
  • While wearing oven mits
  • Speed (twisting a knob vs touch and drag)

@tilton These things are also hella durable. I've got one that's moved multiple times with me, has been dropped, and is still functioning perfectly (though it does emit a bit of RF interference). Mine doesn't have the fancy -a module that does lower case tho (it will transmit lower case, but can only display upper case) I used to use it regularly as a secondary display for text based chat (irc, etc) but these days it's one of my go-tos for testing serial devices. (The other is a Random Colleague clamshell vt220 device)

@stavvers The best part is knowing that there's gotta be people on the ground that speak Klingon and bonus if they just switched over like it was *nothing unusual*

@gme Maybe for the general public but for computer users and data entry- the people using the terminal, '@' would have absolutely been a common character. email is old (1971), and at was (still is) used in business data entry contexts as the delimiter for quantity and price. It's pretty prominent from a typing perspective on the ADM keyboard. @mwichary @tilton

@whyrl Except, of course, the probably most famous example in the Arien 5 (flight v88). Although the root cause was re-use of an inappropriate subroutine and improper exception handling (the 5 had more thrust than the 4 resulting in an overflow), ADAs behavior in debug output contributed. The specific module exception was not handled, allowing the exception to propagate up to the default handler, which outputted debugging data, which was interpreted as control data to the engine gimbles causing it to veer highly off course. That being said, the use of ADA facilitated the post-mortum analysis allowing us to know with pretty high certainty that this is what happened. @bsdphk

@jenniferplusplus@hachyderm.io A Fujitsu Life book T-series might be a good fit and they can be had second hand (I don't think they're made anymore) for around that price Edit: I saw that you meant more peripheral and not like, a surface pro with better Linux support... Wacom one? Wacom in general is kind of the standard for a reason and they're well supported under Linux.

@dangoodin@infosec.exchange I had a cowon d2 back in the day and loved it, and it worked great under Linux, which in 2006 was a BigDeal™ Anyway they've still got a website but it looks like none of their products are still available 😕 The better quality ones available eg from Amazon will be the ones that support FLAC, AAC and OGG, and ideally just show up as a drive to your PC, or take a MicroSD card. The brands are all weird names. Also Sony still makes a android powered walkman

@SuperMoosie@mastodon.au It's more accurate to say that Trump didn't cut it along with other things. It's not like this was a Trump project though SLS was mandated by Congress in 2011 to replace the Shuttle and lunar exploration was always part of the design parameters for the spacecraft. @az@scorpinc.social
