I Write Like
My name's Alexandra. I love books, I write stories: magical realism, surrealism, literary fiction.
IWL is a Markdown text editor I help build, and highly recommend as an author. It's secure. It's in your browser.
I'm a fan of outdoors; often in the mountains or the sea, where you just need to tilt your head a certain way to start noticing magic.

I keep forgetting to show this photo. This is where Mira from my story lived.

"She was turning into a fish, she said. This had been going on for days."
I used to be so annoyed by that "show, don't tell" advice. Writing fiction is called "storytelling" for a reason! There's no showing without telling. Then I discovered that Chekhov never said that. What he said was: "In descriptions of nature one must seize on small details, grouping them so that when the reader closes their eyes they get a picture."
Now, this makes so much more sense.

I hadn't even realized how much I missed a good old photo feed until I visited pixelfed. It's like stepping out into nature where the peace in the air takes away the pain you didn't know you had.
I love reading longer posts. I've been manually going through Mastodon accounts, and clicking blog links. I'm looking for short form or serialized fiction, but I'm just generally interested in everything well written. I've found some blogs, and I'm sure I'll find more, but I'll also be thankful for any recommendations.

I'm trying to figure out whether those creators who do write but don't code use Markdown. I feel like Markdown is still very niche but my perception might be distorted. You'd help a lot if you voted:
This article on the history of pronouns is from BBC Future. As they put it: "In a complex, fast-paced world of soundbites, knee-jerk opinions and information overload, BBC Future provides something different: a home for slowing down, delving deep and shifting perspectives." What a peculiar world we're living in where "future" is defined as slowing down to read about the past.
RE: @iwritelike@mastodon.social
This has been fun. Whenever someone in real life saw me using dark mode they were surprised so I assumed people don't really use it much.
I'll never get tired of this feeling when a language you've been studying sprouts just enough for you to start understanding texts or videos. It feels like a super-power, like being able to walk through walls or fly.
When you type the symbols that come in pairs: an opening one and a closing one, I Write Like adds the closing one automatically.
I feel dinosaur-ancient when I think back to the technologies of my childhood.
Did people always have so many opinions on how others should live, love, read, write, work, relax or is it the internet that amplified a human trait through massive exposure to so many various things?

What if people grow old not because of how many loops the planet has made around the sun and how many times it has spun on its own axis, but because of all the accumulated things that they now miss and grieve?
Here's my blossoming calendar that I use to define warmer weather.
Apparently, Mastodon notifies via email of any mention by default. Do people check their email to see whether someone mentioned them on Mastodon?
