@RickiTarr@beige.party We ate well growing up but I don't want to tell you about that. I want to tell you about how I met my wife's status-obsessed weirdo aunt.
She came to a function at someone's house and these are the very first words she said to me: "So your dad is a doctor right? Wow. You must have had some really good snacks growing up. What did your mom keep in the pantry?"
The woman wanted advice on status-symbol-through-snack-drawer.

@Natasha_Jay I had just about this exact conversation with my grandpa—sitting on his lap—when I was Calvin's age. But in my story he said "I have no idea" and then started to cry.

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social I would recognize them all but I’ll also add “18 Wheeler” and “big rig”. Only just now noticing this thing has so many names.

@RickiTarr@beige.party (which was at least a little funny because my mom was very frugal. She was very mush a "make yourself a sandwich if you're hungry" and "we're buying your clothes at Marshall's because you're just going to out-grow them in six months anyway" kind of person.)

@caroline@chaosfem.tw Priceless. Reminds me of the time I told my four year old she could only bring one stuffed toy with her to the park. She slipped into her closet, shut the door, then emerged a few minutes later with five or six all looped together with a clip into on monster-stuffie.

@RickiTarr Oh this reminds me of the time my brother really wanted to help pump the gas. He was maybe 9. Somehow maneges to splash gas on his own eye. My mom scooped him up and rinsed it and was holding a damp napkin to it while he settled down. And then after a few minutes he’s pretty calm again. And then he says “I really liked having two eyes.”
Just wrapped up "Tom's Crossing" by Mark Danielewski. I'll need some time to recuperate from this.
Like a mad offspring of Larry McMurtry and Charles Portis with a hint of Cormac McCarthy. The structure is bold, the voice distinct.
We could quibble about the ending, but it is so earned it didn't bother me one bit.
And my word, Landry Gatestone is instantly one of the great characters of the western genre.
Just one beautiful, moving, thoughtful, courageous book. #amreading #books #bookstodon

@warandpeas@mastodon.social I'm gonna confess. I thought the last bubble said "Wait...Are you ChatGPT?" And so in my head I just assigned all the dialog to man in orange. And it was still funny.
@maya_b Maybe I'm just very cynical but I would dismiss this immediately as engagement bait if it popped up in my feed. The crying face. The very skilled art. The sob story. The uber-generic twitter handle. Doesn't pass the smell test.

@RickiTarr@beige.party Mildred is an a+++ name and I commend this woman for her bravery in the face of cultural navel gazing.

@RickiTarr@beige.party Don't worry, the corporations and billionaires will get those people all worked up about, I don't know, maybe teenage girls this time? Anyway, they'll find something.

@Aphelion@mastodon.sdf.org Have you ever read Mary MacLane?
“I am not good. I am not virtuous. I am not sympathetic. I am not generous. I am merely and above all a creature of intense passionate feeling. I feel—everything. It is my genius. It burns me like fire.” 🔥

@ObsidianUrbex Wow this is surfacing long-dormant memories over here. A car like this, not so old, was somehow in the forests behind my grandparents’ house when I was a kid. We spent a lot of hours wondering how it got out there. And once as a little kid I had a very vivid dream that I found a gold railroad spike in its glovebox which made me rich haha.

@evan@cosocial.ca Really embarassing to admit this but for years I had somewhat contentious dental cleanings and for the last, say, 10 years it has been a breeze -- to the point that my hygeinist has said more than once I "win the award" for best mouth hygein. And literally the only thing that chnaged is I started actually flossing twice a day.

@amans I only meant I clicked "like" because we had a shared experience. It did not mean I like that you are sad! Santé !

@Odradek Oh yes I hear you. Something I struggle with a lot. And in my 1-1 human interactions I generally think it is better to trust, and be taken advantage of not and again, than to foster a local community of distrust.
I'm a lot more cynical online because the scale is so out of balance. Just a few bad actors can put out SO MUCH STUFF that I worry you run the risk of burning out your empathy on things that don't deserve it, in ways that actually make the world worse.

@alicefrieren The moment that hurt the most was Tom no longer remembering Landry.
But probably what moved me the most was Landry’s mother first helping her care for Jojo at the hospital. “the sight of her momma knowin what mattered most to her heart, no matter her own appearance, her wounded flesh, her blood-drenched body, why that filled Landry with a spirit that not even the long years yet left to her could ever diminish.”

@iwritelike Needs an option for I can’t code, I don’t know what markdown is, and I use funny symbols like stars and stuff in my company’s fix system, publishing platform, ticketing system, etc… to add style and structure.
