@mementomaori@kind.social Everyone seems to hate daylight saving now. I don't remember anyone ever particularly liking it, but I swear when I was a kid the general attitude was mostly indifferent.
I therefore blame neoliberalism. My theory is that so much of our leisure time has been taken away that changing the clock by one hour now legitimately looms as a significant impact on what remains of our own time.

Reflect Orbital: You know what people hate? Daylight saving.
But what if there was a way we could take daylight saving and make it so very rich people can selfishly inflict it on you any time they choose?
That's the part of daylight saving you hate, right? All doing it together?

✅ Motion 6 is sensible. Tracking IPv6 uptake is a good task for InternetNZ.
🤷 Motion 7 seems fine to me. InternetNZ says it will do market research on why people choose and retain .nz domain names, so it seems harmless to require that the results be reported.
❌(ish) Motion 8 would establish a nominating committee. This is probably well-intentioned and a fairly common structure for a community institution, but I don't think the nominators have made a sufficient case explaining what problem it solves. My concern is that such a committee could be hijacked to make recommendations that favour white male conservatives. It feels like trying to solve a political problem with extra rules. I'm open to being persuaded on this by a good case at the AGM, but my inclination is to vote against it.
#InternetNZ AGM is 5:30pm, Thursday 13 August.

The key words “INSHALLAH”, and “IF GOD SO WILLS” in this document WILL be interpreted as described in the Holy Quran, surah Al-Kahf verses 23-24.

Spoilers for Silo season 3, trying not to be too specific
@mementomaori@kind.social OK, so… I watched through to the end and honestly I could have done without episode nine too. The finale was the first episode of the season that I found interesting.
I get that you sometimes have to have an unsatisfying middle season to move everything around for a satisfying conclusion, but this season felt really padded.
I reckon they could have started the season with the bit about Troy and Silo 17. Then the prequel stuff would have been intriguing: how did he get there? Who is he? That would also have provided some stakes for the plot lines with Juliet and her friends. Maybe two and a half episodes for them, one episode for all of Troy's backstory, and a tense finale where they're up against each other. About five episodes for what they spent ten on.

Slight not-very-specific spoilers for Silo season 3, request for more slight spoilers
@mementomaori@kind.social Does the present-day flashback plot ever feel interesting or relevant?
I'm six episodes in and I still don't care, so it's really undermining the rest of the show for me. Every time there's some tension building up we switch to several minutes of boring stuff that doesn't matter.
I'm guessing that it's needed to support some plot in the next season, and I think I dislike prequels more than most people, but I'm struggling to continue.

@juliaclement@mastodon.nz No problem. It's exactly the kind of problem that InternetNZ can lead on as a civil society organisation, and which private companies have manifestly failed to take seriously all over the world.

@slimhazard@mastodon.world @pluralistic@mamot.fr I'm all for the concept, but I feel the name is an unnecessary negative association. Yes, sewers are great and we should all want them to work, but also they remind people of shit. Most people who hear “sewer socialism” are going to need a whole lot of context to understand that it's supposed to be a good thing.

Or both maybe.

@jardo@townwizard.net Yeah, I'm not attending an meetups at the moment. Partly because I'm doing less coding, but also because the opportunity to see good friends is slightly outweighed by the higher chance of sitting through another vibe coding demo.

@HG@beige.party I'm in my early fifties. I can confidently say that I would not get this usage of “elders” from context, and I think if a first-grader explained it to me my first instinct would be that they must have misunderstood. To my mind an elder is an old person, and I don't even qualify myself. It's very unlikely that it would refer to a second-grader. I don't even trust that Mormons are called elders if they're under forty and not wearing a badge.
I hope that the opinions of multiple parents would clue me in that some special jargon was in play, but I'd still want to confirm with the teacher.
However… that's the problem with early dementia: the pattern becomes apparent even when each isolated incident can still be explained away. You know your mother, and if you're concerned you're probably right.

@LRRRonEarth@beige.party @ndnd@beige.party There is also a potential reading of Godzilla as a powerful nature spirit such as you find in Japanese folk religion. Like a giant Totoro turned monstrous and destructive by humanity's actions. This chimes with the experience of the war years, when an ultranationalist military emperor cult had dominated Japan with an ideology that laid claim to traditional Japanese culture and used it to cause immense suffering and ultimate humiliation.

@strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz It's on our list. We didn't originally plan to do website hosting, but we're hearing that it's something a lot of people need. The work to do is really to articulate which platforms are good for which jobs.
I'm personally a fan of Drupal for many jobs, but it has a learning curve that's not going to work for most people.

Spoilers for Silo season 3, trying not to be too specific
@runoutgroover@social.vivaldi.net @mementomaori@kind.social I think it's good enough to be intensely frustrating that it's not better. But just barely. My wife gave up halfway through S03, and I watched the rest more out of morbid curiosity about why they chose to write it this way than any actual engagement with the plot or characters.
It does feel like they finally pulled off a reason to care again in the very last episode, and I can't see why that needed to be held back. So I guess I'll watch the final season next year. They've successfully lowered my expectations so far that I might even enjoy it.
Like the third Matrix film.
