When it comes down to it, I think the stock market (and indirectly, human greed) seems to be the root of most of tech ills, including enshittification, subscription hell and the AI apolocalyspe.
The market's demand for constant expansion causes boards of directors to insist on all sorts of awful behaviour, all in the name of revenue growth.
Once your favourite tech project gets bought, or goes public itself, it's only a matter of time before it dumps the "Let's not be evil", even if it already had one.

And of course they need to fix the reasons for that, otherwise immigrants will be joining them once they get their citizenship.
