I own way too many clicky keyboards. I love relaxing in hammock chairs and I have deeply obscure Simpsons references for every situation.

@cwebber@social.coop also the regulatory environment is super lax right now so they feel emboldened to just casually have a conversation in the open amongst themselves about how they plan to be less competitive with one another

@siracusa@mastodon.social the biggest disappointment about this is that Apple never did bother to solve their RAM ceiling problem in Apple Silicon Macs. I was hoping to see some clever solution that added slotted memory that had a direct connection to the rest of the SOC to be super fast and low latency. Hell, I would have settled for a version that was architected like the Intel Mac Pro with slotted RAM and higher capacity at the cost of latency. Instead Apple just didn't bother to try to solve it.

@torb@hachyderm.io it is! You could configure a Mac Pro with 1.5 TB of RAM in 2019. And now it's easy to conceive of an AI-focused workload where you might want to run a large model that could easily blow past even 1.5 TB. Apple's unified memory approach has a lot of advantages for most of its lineup, but the super high end is poorly served by this because of those limits (and now we can really overcome those limits by doubling up on SOCs which forces you to add CPU/GPU cores you might not need)

@siracusa@mastodon.social (or the expansion issue in general; it would have been super cool to see a new type of MPX module that was tightly integrated enough that it performed like adding new GPU cores to the SOC or something)

the biggest "this is so stupid I can't believe it works" kind of thing are the prompts that code review tools feed into the AI. The prompts literally instruct the LLM to role play like a series of different personas, each looking for different things in the code. The stupidest thing is that these prompts actually work! The LLMs give better feedback this way.

After over a year of being annoyed that my Apple TV remote hasn’t been able to control my TV volume I finally dug into it tonight and was able to fix it.

By rebooting the remote.

Which means my remote probably had the highest uptime of any of the devices in my house until tonight.

@matdevdug@c.im This concept was added to the Brave browser! (https://brave.com/blog/introducing-brave-payments/) It uses a cryptocurrency (because moving actual money around for that is astonishingly hard and it's simpler to move the virtual currency instead, then the web sites can convert to real money). I personally never used Brave but i've always been delighted by the concept and wished this had caught on.

@keenan I’m really excited for you! So many of us live life by staying on the marked metaphorical trail, sticking with the default prescribed choices offered to us, and you’re making the bold and courageous choice to go and chart your own path. And I’m not saying that it’s good or bad to stay on the trail or chart your own, but I think those experiences get to be considerably richer when you take a hop off of the default path.

If there was one place in Tahoe where it would have made sense to put menu icons, it would have been in this context menu when you right-click the Music app's dock icon.

@zed@mstdn.party I forget whether it was part of the 2019 WWDC keynote or in some supplemental materials released that same week but there were interviews with audio professionals who were delighted to finally be able to have Logic sessions where they could actually edit a full recording with dozens of different instruments on their own tracks, and this was something they were finally able to do because of the RAM levels. MKBHD discussed this when he reviewed the 2019 Mac Pro as well.

@pointlessone I get why it works, but it feelslike a bad architecture to put things structural to your actual product into the prompt, where 1) behavior is not deterministic, and 2) you increase the chances not every instruction will be followed to the letter the more you cram in there (plus the fact that your prompt has limits to how big it can be). It feels like we don't try to build the models to be more specialized because we either don't know how, or we know it'd be really expensive.
