After decades living in Victoria (yes, I know Maщa), I found myself transplated in 2025 to Port Alberni. I expect the reasons I stay may differ from the reasons I came here. Plus, the scenery is epic. Epic.

Obligate cyclist, as not all disabilities are visible or obvious. Post-covid complications are interfering, and I ain't calm about that.

I have a working memory as often as not. This occasionally gets me marked as a dangerous radical and less frequently a hopeless romantic.

I hit linux on the way to learning vector spaces, and now I can't grok why MS software is used anywhere.

Mad Skillz enough to make adults swear out loud, but acutely aware that "specialization is for insects."

@aharoni @Luckluster @jhsoby There are several window managers in the linux and BSD world where holding down the alt key while clicking on a window anywhere instead moves it (without grabbing the title bar explicitly), so this doesn't work for me in particular.

It's written for beginners, yes, but I learned more from TBG than from five years of sysadmin work - and it made my job easier.

@zappes @ics That isn't the policy, explicit or implicit, so back up one. To claim they are enemies (or even seen to be so) is a truly unwarranted exaggeration. Women have cause to not trust men by default, which is different from distrusting men by default (and some women have cause for that posture).

@mguhlin@zirk.us @ScottEdelman Because you've been blocked by most everyone involved, you may have a hard time learning this quickly: what you did here is 100% a shit move. There was no need for it, and it made both the conversation and the world worse, and you chose that outcome. While doing better may require only two minutes thought, don't expect anyone else to do that work for you: (1) they won't, and (2) *you* have to do the thinking in order for improvement to happen.

Discussing cinema with Jeff today and the question of exposition came up. Quite a few horror movies work *really* well when nothing is explained and you just have to roll with it (e.g. Alien) and quite a few are made worse by attempts to explain (his example: Back Rooms, which I have not seen (and Jeff still thinks it's a good movie despite it)). So, the question comes: is it a hard and fast rule, "don't do it", or is it an expert rule, "don't do it yet"? I figure the monsterdon bunch may know a good deal more movies to suggest examining for this property. #monsterdon

@glyph@mastodon.social So yeah, um, they are (among other things) speedrunning the destruction of the planet's ability to sustain humanity. Are death threats *really* the greater evil here? Because it's not obvious. That said, don't send death threats. It makes it really hard to catch the target unawares.
