#MayDay #BlackMastodon #BlackFedi #BlackTwitter

My daughter (who is grown) said her friends did not know about the general strike called for this Friday, May 1st. She was shocked by that. Let me do my bit and remind people that a general strike is happening Friday. General means its for everyone. Did you march in a #NoKingsDay? Well now it's time to up your game. Check Indivisible for events in your area. In Washington DC we'll all be at the Washington Monument. https://indivisible.org/campaigns/may-day-participation-guide/

#NationalGuard #DC # #Michhigan #Minnesota #BlackMastodon #BlackFedi #BlackTwitter The National Guard is still occupying DC against the will of the residents here. We were terribly disturbed and stunned to learn 3 Democratic governors sent fresh troops to DC. Michigan and Minnesota are 2 of the 3. If you live or have ties to either state we are asking you to email your governors and ask them to withdraw their troops from DC. I won't be on line for a week or so but go to freedcproject.org/guard.

@DeliaChristina@sfba.social Agree so deeply with your comment. In the old days an investigative journalist would have donned a nurse's uniform and gone into the dang hospital room. Then someone dressed as a deliveryman would have been hanging out near the house or at least hacked the ring camera! Seriously....very few journalists left today.

@heidilifeldman@mastodon.social I find this ludicrous. Local news covered the liner fiasco before Hearn touched the pool. In last week's local reporting they stated that one witness in the grand jury specifically said the pool liner was already damaged and they couldn't say for a fact that Hearn made it worse. That's why his lawyers wanted the judge to look at the grand jury transcripts.

#Books #Reading #BookerPrize #BlackMastodon #BlackFedi #BlackTwitter The Booker Prize list was announced today. https://www.npr.org/2026/07/28/nx-s1-5874638/2026-booker-prize-longlist-fiction I often buy the prize winner although I don't know why. I haven't liked a single one. That's probably an unpopular sentiment, but I have the 2024 winner, ORBITAL, sitting in my recovery stack. Started it but won't finish it. I really do need to stop buying them.
Here are the 13 books that made the Booker Prize longlist

Or, any of the thousands disappeared out of Alligator Alley? What’s the name of the guy who was murdered while he was detained? Can we imagine them? See what I’m saying? The tactics used by ICE now in MN, Chicago, L.A., Portland, were perfected right here in DC in August! 6/8

Because the ongoing refusal to acknowledge this basic fact of 1) prevents the formation of real multicultural alliances; 2) allows allies to view harms as those that affect only their communities and not the ones that look nothing like them; and 3) it allows folks to continue to avoid doing of the painful intersectional analysis of the harms racism creates. 4/8

Want to know where cities can get the money to pay for healthcare, childcare, housing, food security? We can stop paying out millions in taxpayer dollars for police misconduct. We can start there and add in overtime fraud. You can do something with that kind of money. https://gothamist.com/news/nyc-taxpayers-on-the-hook-for-more-than-117m-in-police-misconduct-payouts-last-year

#books #reading #SciFi #BlackMastodon #BlackFedi
There's a book appearing on many lists of new sci-fi to look out for. The title is ALCHEMISED by SenLin Yu. Interesting (and long 900+ pages) story of a society where alchemy rules between two warring factions. IMO there should be a very noticeable CW warning on the book. VERY detailed and repeated descriptions of torture and also extended abuse of women. People triggered by violence should pass this one.

They work with youth, economic development, housing, wellness, and violence prevention, all within their targeted area. This is abolitionist theory in action. We can all have safe communities, free of violence by the police or others, if the needs of the community are being met. Lets hope the Mamdani team finds and explores good alternatives. 7/7

@andrewstroehlein The article is well written but what troubles me is that these things Minnesotans are doing have been done by Portland, Seattle, LA , Oakland, DC, New Orleans and not that long ago Chicago. People have been fighting since before August! Press is only interested when a white person gets killed or threatened. I applaud all the folks standing up in Minnesota, but it isn't an anomaly, it's the new reality.

@independentpen@mas.to I hear you but here's a better way to do it that doesn't allow those who willfully close their eyes to reality: This is who we are but we don't have to be that. We can be better. Yeah? It acknowledges the reality and incorporates the rejection. Not as catchy for the press quotes, but its truthful.

#BlackMastodon #BlackFedi #BlackTwitter #Abolition #Food The disruption highlights one of the dangers of the state relying on corporations to decide which community needs will be met. The corps are just trying to get those tax deductions. Philanthropic literature criticizing the perils of reliance on corporate prioritizing goes all the way back to Andrew Carnegie’s financing of libraries. City owned groceries could help avoid the reliance on “charity” to feed hungry people. 5/7

#BlackMastodon #BlackFedi #BlackTwitter #Abolition #Food The idea is to get alternative access to food into underserved communities. Recently one of our local weekly food distributions was impacted by Amazon’s decision to close its cashless store Amazon Fresh. Some of the groceries donated to our food distro came from Amazon Fresh. The organizers distributed a memo saying the availability of some foods would be affected by the closure. At this distro we service 150 food insecure people. 4/7

As has always been the case when Black folks point to and highlight white supremacy, the response is always to deny our truth, claim we exaggerate, or refuse to pull ourselves up. #BlackMastodon #BlackFedi #BlackTwitter #Abolition #Food During Mamdani’s campaign for mayor he proposed NYC create a city owned grocery store. His opponents at the time ridiculed the idea, partly do his cost estimate ($470 mil), partly because the idea of a city run grocery store seems weird to some. Of course his proposal targets those poorer communities where food insecurity is a constant problem, not the overall city. 2/7

@solitha @andrewstroehlein We do know how it played out. The whistles were from Chicago. Faith leaders in Portland etc. Rapid Responders in ALL the cities. The general strike was because a white person was killed. She shouldn't have been killed but that's what grabbed the news and the community (white) that finally got the message of what has been going on. People are working on a nationwide strike through Indivisible before anyone was killed.

State violence is scary and most Americans who don't know or don't want to know our very long history of violence might be feeling a little trapped right now. Is it really possible the government may come after them too? They don't want to comfort that possible reality. Safer to go with all the fed agents are really good, law abiding people underneath it all.

You are correct legally that genocide does not require the total erasure of a people to still be called genocide, However, that is not really relevant to the point I am making and I intentionally chose that phrasing for the reply guys who will say Native people are still here therefore it wasn't genocide. You know how your people are.
