@morgan@sfba.social MFA for work should support SMS as an option instead of apps. At various times I have done it that way. Or a USB dongle? See what your employer supports.

A few scenes around SLO/#SanLuisObispo. The bell is in front of the #UnitarianUniversalist church. Nobody knows the story behind it; it just came with the property. Probably a previous congregation on the site had a traditional church building with a steeple (the current structure is pretty modern) and kept the bell from it. Something to research.

@ScoterD @ai6yr @AlaskaWx @transitionalaspect One more--Chumash has lots of kinds of reduplication. That means you make a copy of part of a word, usually the beginning. For example, the Chumash build boats out of reeds. One reed boat is "tomol". The plural is "tomtomol". The are a bunch of reduplication patterns and more than one can happen in the same word. It gets complicated. A friend of mine wrote her dissertation on this. Guess I miss this stuff.

Last one! From the Cal Poly campus. The Duaflex has a fixed 10'-inf focus, but I put a close-up lens on it for this, and was standing just a couple of feet away. Seems to have worked nicely.

@theleftistlawyer When I first read about this, and saw headlines like "protests in front of synagogues", I thought that was going to far--until I read the details. Protesting in front of a place of worship is not nice, but if the place of worship is being used as a real estate office for stolen land, it's not a place of worship, at least for the time. And this is where I started to figure out that almost every time I heard about brazen antisemitism in the pro-Palestinian movement, if you read the details, not really (in the US, at least). And there really is brazen antisemitism out there. The fact that pro-Palestinian activists are being smeared as antisemitic is just obscuring that fact and making it harder to see, really.

@ozoned One thing that's nice about the Fediverse that's not quantifiable, is that I've actually made some friends here that I've never met in the real world. In all the years I actually was on FB and looked at the "feed", it was zero. (There have been a couple--ok maybe just one--from FB groups, but in the feed? nobody). In the days of email lists, I had friends through those. That was pretty much destroyed by social media, mainly FB (and this is why I will curse meta forever). Anyway, like I said, this is important, but not directly quantifiable.

I've been wondering for a while if you can connect a turntable to a guitar amp. Indeed you can. Doesn't sound great but it does work.
It's a cheap and small amp, and an old 78, so take that into account.

@ScoterD @ai6yr @AlaskaWx @transitionalaspect More fun Chumash language grammar trivia: It has "sibilant harmony". This means if you add a suffix to a word, and the suffix contains š, it turns any s in the word into a š (and maybe vice-versa). I found some examples: (From this paper: https://roa.rutgers.edu/files/879-1006/879-MCCARTHY-0-0.PDF "Optimality Theory" was a big deal about when I was finishing school. It's complete BS, and the sort of thing that made me happy to work in industry instead of academia).

Or a local village. There are lists of Ohlone villages, but not always with exact locations: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ohlone_villages Also, there are still Ohlone who might have opinions on this, though I don't know if any of them identify as Yelamu specifically.

@gbargoud @greene It was worse than I even thought. Still, lots of interesting things going on here. I know we've all been talking about vaccines but I'm not sure what part of this decrease is due to that. I suppose better nutrition and overall medical care helped too. And what happened in the 1870's and 80's? There's a bump around 1920--was that the Spanish flu? Interesting that the 1930's, despite economic hardship, child mortality continued to decline. But I also, if I'm reading this correctly, it was still somewhere around 2-3% in 1970. That's my cohort. I had no idea.

My company has an internal AI chatbot, and I've found one good use for AI--if you've been pretending to know all about something so long that it'd be embarassing to ask about it now, and internal documentation is useless, at least a chatbot won't raise an eyebrow at your ignorance!

@fulanigirl@mstdn.social It's funny you mention Kissinger. That's one time I though, "I should get outside of my left-wing Mastodon bubble and check neutral sources". So I read the whole Wikipedia article on the bastard. And learned he did so many evil things that I had never even heard about. Hell needs a special subbasement.

@cstross@wandering.shop You have the opposite problem when writing down something you're planning to read in front of people. Suddenly you realize you sound like a book. (Could be fine, or not, depending on the context--in my case it's intro'ing silly old movies and people do not want a lecture!)
