I see some musicians going all "Metallica vs. Napster" about the Anna's Archive thing, and I feel the need to remind folks that corporations and the music industry have done more to ruin things for us than piracy ever could.

Big and exciting changes happening. The bad news is that current music and other projects will have to be put on hold. The good news is a better and more stable home for my family (and that of a close friend), rather than having to worry that our current place could be sold out from under us any day. It's been on the market for years and nothing seems to be happening, but it still sucks having that in the back of our minds all the time. Somewhat scary, but steps forward often are.

You may have heard already, but the 2nd volume of The Four Seasons of Bonk Wave: Autumn Waves is out! I'm honored to have a Fugue State track appearing therein. :)

https://music.bonkwave.org/the-four-seasons-of-bonkwave-autumn-waves-2/

I might be biased, but I honestly think these bonkwave compilations have been consistently truly excellent.

Does anybody have any good resources on establishing a business as a co-op in Colorado (USA)? I'm thinking we might want to consult a professional, so recommendations there are appreciated, as are pointers to any helpful info.

Boosts welcome.

@jonhendry @kevinrns the users (listeners), especially the ones paying Spotify (not that they're the only culprits) to have their data collected and sold, are victims too. Considering that some of those profits are then being used to invest in AI weapons research, that could become even more the case in the future.

If you can't bring yourself to give any money to the payment processors today, or if you have no money to give, you can still grab some music from my Faircamp page (just enter "0" for the amount). #faircamp #FairTradeMusichttps://faircamp.fstateaudio.com/

@mntmn I've been a happy Reaper user for many years, so very cool that I can still use it on Linux. Surge XT has become my go-to "super synth," and I'm using Cardinal for a lot of what I used to use Biome for (modular fx processing). The main things I miss are Sound Forge and Reaktor.

@eyesquash@mastodon.world @tpherndon@hachyderm.io It all has to do with the fact that what we now call "A" was just the lowest note in the system our current system grew out of, and early on, there was no such thing as sharps or flats at all, or the concept of keys/modes as we know them. As stuff got added, that's essentially just how it worked out. I think the "middle C" thing is also related to C being the reference point between the bass and treble staffs in notation.

@controlfreak Thanks! What you say there re: cc-by is why I kinda hesitated as to whether this was worth doing, but I finally decided that it was, if for no other reason than specifically spelling out that last bit.

@darwinwoodka @YanK If you look into the history, radio is really where the whole clusterfuck started, and only remained free because people worked to keep it that way. It helped that the general public consensus was that the airwaves weren't something that could be owned. But even then, it wasn't really free, it was just that the radio stations were paying the fees, and making their money in turn through advertising.

@TheOneDoc I'm talking about things I've seen from other independent musicians, but I have little doubt that the environment you describe has seeped into people's minds, if that makes sense. The days of physical media were only better in the sense that listeners didn't have to pay what amounts to recurring rental fees and weren't serving so much as sources of data to be sold, but the industry has always been a system of exploitation.
