There has been a lot of sloppy reporting regarding DarkSword, with basically every news outlet saying that iOS 18 is vulnerable. It’s not, if you have the latest 18.7.3.

Google has a more in depth analysis, with a lot more information on the specific versions of iOS that are affected.

TL;DR It doesn’t seem to affect 18.7.3 at least (might also not work on 18.7.2 given that CVE-2025-43520, which DarkSword uses, has been patched in .2).

I have a 2.0L, 275CV car that can quite easily go well over 200 km/h, and yeah, I get much worse fuel economy at 130 (and over) than at 85. And I can assure you it’s a really competent track car, so it *is* made to go fast, like really fast. Other less track ready cars might be more optimized for cruising at 100-130 km/h, but a lot are not, I’m quite sure 🤷🏼‍♂️

@kristoffer@mastodon.kristofferjohansson.com @obrhoff@mastodon.social build quality of the alternatives is indeed a problem, but the fact that basically none is offering a glossy version is imho even worse (Benq now has one, but it has a strange 70Hz frequency that is… well, strange 🤷🏼‍♂️). That Asus one is good, plastic-y and matte, but good; my gf has one, and for the price it’s really nice.

So, when I looked at prefab houses (both concrete and wood) in Spain (Cantabria in particular) last year, I found the prices to be perfectly reasonable, some even offering Passivhaus certification, and all looking really good.

Now we’re on the active search for a terrain, and I looked again at the same houses, and, lo and behold, they’re all around 15-20% more expensive, screwing up our budget. Fuck.

Inflation my ass. So pissed off right now. 🤬🤬🤬

(“Normal” ones look to be the same story)

@lproven unconvinced that you can’t. A modular NUMA system with multiple Mx Max/Ultra could be built, if they want to. I would love to see one built. But the question is: would it make sense from a business perspective? Honestly, I don’t think so; it would be really niche, and I don’t see Apple so interested in gaining market share in the [really] professional market, tbh. 🤷🏼‍♂️ But from a technological point of view? Yep, it could be done.

@leeloo@c.im @dimitribouniol@mastodon.social @helge@mastodon.social @finestructure@mastodon.social all correct, expect for maybe “driving the slowest your engine will willingly go”. You have to take the torque curve into account: at low speed, the engine might not stutter, but at lower RPMs the engine is not providing enough torque, thus getting you worse fuel efficiency. Ideally you want to have enough torque, at the lowest RPMs possible for a given speed, which is not always the lowest absolute RPM without stuttering.

@tripleman I’m on 18.7.3 on a 13 Pro. Every iPhone up to 16 received it, until Apple decided to make 18.7.3+ XR and XS only. So the ones that received either 18.7.2 or 18.7.3 and still haven’t upgraded to 26 are safe to stay on 18.7.x. Saying that all 18.x are not safe is simply not true.

@tripleman you could try switching on iOS 18 public beta, it might (might, not sure) give you the option for 18.7.2 or 18.7.3. If it doesn’t, I guess you’re of luck, since from 18.7.4 on (or maybe even 18.7.3; I got it before they “forced” the 26 update for newer phones) it looks like they’re only for iPhone XR and XS 🤷🏼‍♂️

@lproven sorry, but the AS GPUs are absolutely capable of doing general purpose computation. What is missing is CUDA support, but that doesn’t absolutely mean they’re not more than good at GPGPU. The fact that the RAM is local to each AS processor is why I wrote NUMA system. Moreover, every multi-GPU system is de facto a NUMA one, since the graphics memory is local to each single GPU card, and each GPU can only talk to its memory. Also, they’re not connect to any output, usually.

At 130 km/h I consume roughly double. But regarding the topic at hand, cruising at 100 on the highway instead of 130 or, worse, 180/200 will absolutely consume less gas per km. At those speeds, air resistance is the biggest consumption hit, so…
