@finestructure@mastodon.social I get this, I was just skeptical that this graph from who knows how long ago is also representative of today’s cars, especially ones who have a low economy to start with but were “optimized for faster speeds”. The error in my thought process was not realizing that the reason they got better economy at “faster” speeds was because the engine just wasn't being fed any fuel and was self-propelled at an optimal RPM by the mass of the car already moving. Thanks for putting up with me 😅

@helge@mastodon.social @fmarini@mastodon.social @finestructure@mastodon.social I'm actually not, but I do wonder for the accidents that do happen at that speed if survivorship goes down? I can totally comprehend that for someone driving safely, the speed limit doesn't have an impact, while those driving unsafely don't care about the limit anyways, so it doesn't actually have an effect on decreasing the number of accidents…

@finestructure@mastodon.social Does going too fast actually use considerably more gas? Anecdotally, I’ve probably seen my _best_ fuel economy when I was accidentally cruising way above the speed limit of 70 mph (though I can imagine it also getting worse past 100 mph, which I’ve only done once to see if I could handle it…)

Officially giving up adding more support for typed throws to #AsyncSequenceReader until I can comfortably drop iOS 13-17, and Swift 6.x supports inferring them in closures with a feature flag. So many wasted hours 😅

@Retcon@indieapps.space @Cykelero@mas.to Now I know it can do this, I’d love a preference where I can edit the format string (ideally with tokens for message, description, hash, author, date…)! For me, I’d use • <# title #>. for instance.

@fmarini@mastodon.social @helge@mastodon.social @finestructure@mastodon.social Also, this is mostly speaking from ignorance, but I’m mostly talking about limits of 70 mph/115 km/h being mostly good for safety, but not quite “there” when it comes to better fuel economy for cars with big engines. I genuinely get better mileage (kilometerage?) driving closer to 90mph / 140 km/h, but that only gets worse if I go faster, not that I realistically _would_ go much faster though, because again, too fast? (how fast are normal people actually going?)

@helge@mastodon.social @finestructure@mastodon.social Oh, I assumed a “general speed limit” was only for the maximum on what would essentially be longer drives, not day-to-day city driving. I guess I’m not convinced “going less fast” on those roads actually uses more gas for the drive as a whole. (That said, I will concede that _having_ speed limits deprioritizes gas-guzzling engines in the market, which should absolutely lead to lower gas usage over time, but those effects are 10 years out at the least)

@helge@mastodon.social @finestructure@mastodon.social For a given amount of time, sure, but for a given distance, if you use just a tiny bit more energy to get there significantly faster, then you use less overall, hence better fuel economy, right? Same logic applies to our Mac — sure the efficiency cores always win, but if you “must” use your super (lol) cores at all, better use them for the smallest duration of time you need if you want to get the most battery life 😛

@helge@mastodon.social @fmarini@mastodon.social @finestructure@mastodon.social I guess it just feels weird to me that “lowering the speed limit” is what’ll be even a minor push for decreasing the amount of climate change — unless its from the perspective of encouraging folks to get vehicles whose optimal speed is no where near the speed limit to begin with (you know, an _actual_ improvement over the gas-guzzling speedsters) 😛

@helge@mastodon.social @fmarini@mastodon.social @finestructure@mastodon.social Ok, from my perspective, >130 km/h (already over the speed limits here) is “going too fast”, hence most of my confusion. I can’t concede that going 130 is giving you so much more air resistance over 85 that you are getting worse fuel economy in any car even capable of going that fast comfortably, but its a totally different story for >200 😛 (Also, do I even want to know what an accident looks like at 200 km/h? 😬)

@overcastfm@mastodon.social One that I’ve been seeing since _before_ the iOS 26 rewrite (and after): on light mode, if you tap to download an episode, and it asks if you wanna do it now or over cellular, the text in the alert buttons are white 🙈 (No rush to fix, but I figured you may not have realized this one was happening.)
