RE: @BlumeEvolution@digitalcourage.social

It’s not a full-fledged argument, but I was just thinking how a standard narrative is “early computers were so large they filled complete rooms, then came the personal computing revolution, and now we carry computers much more powerful in our pockets” when actually the way we use our mobile computers they are again input/output terminals of computers that fill entire rooms (or halls, really).

RE: @markhurst@mastodon.social

Sweden already dialed back technology use in school classrooms and apologized to the young generation affected by this in-the-wild experiment. I'm increasingly worried that the introduction of GenAI will have the same effect on university students and that we'll owe them an apology in a couple of years when the negative impact becomes apparent.

One of my favorite projects that came out of that course is a map of the global dispersion of Shahnama manuscripts, using the Cambridge collection IIIF as a data source, processing it using OpenRefine, and displaying it as a spatial network using Palladio. All data and tools are easily available, it’s just very light data processing, but the clever combination results in a meaningful visualization that teaches us something about the history and present of global cultural heritage. 2/2

Two days into the semester, and already two successful PhD defenses. Congratulations to Sebastian Reimann and Adam Roussel, the first PhDs coming out of @sfb1475@nrw.social! It's great to see these years of work coming together like this.

Fedi, I need your input! Since the web is dead and googling "which user agent to use for responsible web scraping" mostly returns AI-generated garbage promoting how to spoof the user agent for non-responsible web scraping: What are your best practices? Any guide you would recommend? #FediHelp #WebScraping #DigitalHumanities

@tante Idk, I count myself pretty AI skeptical, but after reading the whole thing (https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/the-future-of-ai-in-ubuntu/81130) I must say that I think that’s one of the more considerate stances towards AI that I have read from a tech company in a while. It’s not that Ubuntu (or any Linux desktop environment) has been free from AI before. Thunderbird has spam filters since when? Automatic tagging and face detection in digiKam anyone?

The future of AI in Ubuntu

As 2026 progresses, LLM-based tools are becoming more and more ubiquitous. Adoption across the tech industry has been mixed, both in terms of which projects are embracing “AI” technologies, and in how companies are structuring their adoption. As a result, I’m frequently asked about what Canonical and Ubuntu will do (or not) to incorporate AI. In this post I’ll detail how AI will play a part in both Canonical and Ubuntu’s future, my framework for classifying AI features in the OS, and how Canoni

@mike @mpe Right, in the end, something like the Pandoc AST could be a good basis for a deliberately reduced document model for scholarly articles. Markdown is just currently the easiest way to edit that AST. A few years ago, there were multiple efforts to build “scholarly google docs” systems, mostly based on JATS. But few of them survived, probably supporting your skepticism.

I do admit that some of the power of simpler systems comes from the ability to write LaTeX if you have to, and that requires training.

@lukascbossert @rasmus91 @dkz2r @thecarpentries I've been there, I've done that. I wrote my PhD thesis with LaTeX. But if I teach text production now, I usually advocate for markdown based workflows where LaTeX remains an invisible typesetting engine in the background. And maybe at some point event that should be replaced by typst or something like that.

@mpe @mike OTOH, at least it’s a standard, in contrast to Markdown. So I guess my approach would be using Markdown during the editorial process, converting from/to docx for everything author-facing, and serializing the pandoc AST to a subset of JATS for archival purposes. (Although the JTEI schema would also nicely fit that purpose, just less “serious publisher” signalling.)

@mpe @mike Oh, I agree! But the DOCX of pandoc is pretty decent, and it avoids having another, specialized editor that authors have to familiarize themselves with. So “we accept DOCX submissions adhering to this template, and we discard all formatting except what’s pre-defined” is in my experience a viable compromise.
