No-input is my instrument: An intro to Making Music with a No-input Mixing Board

Typical procrastination work: I put out a blog post on playing the no-input mixer rather than work on school or scholarly work I'm supposed to be doing today

Since I can't use Faircamp static album site generator I started building out my own website alternative. I have a million other projects to finish first, but I thought why not hack around #DecemberAdventure style for an hour. I think I got the landing page about 90% of the way there and the album pages I got a nice audio player going. Hopefully can finish it up later this month.

@mntmn i am very intrigued by the reform next. hopefully there will be some around at event to test out in berlin this summer! my current laptop seems to be reaching end of life despite my efforts to try to keep it alive. would be nice to have one that is built from the ground up to support that goal

Here's a gift link to the NYTimes article. It takes about an hour to read! By the reporter John Carreyou (famous for reporting on Theranos).

I don't particulary care about Bitcoin, but i love a good detective story!

My Quest to Solve Bitcoin’s Great Mystery

> Bitcoin’s creator has hidden behind the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto for 17 years. But a trail of clues buried deep in crypto lore led to a 55-year-old computer scientist named Adam Back.

@bd @neauoire @eli_oat At my art collective for about 10 years we had monthly dinner and art presentations called "Flux Thursday". Then we shifted to Saturdays one summer and we called it "Flux Thursdays on Saturday" (and looks like we did it on sundays during the pandemic too: https://withfriends.events/event/y9zmqtqq/cool/ )

I joined a climbing gym for the month because they have a killer deal. I'm enjoying climbing but my arms are getting so sore. I have to work on my technique and get my feet to push me up.

@eli_oat@tenforward.social Hi hi, loved your last blog post on The Seed Beneath the Snow! Even though I don't think I'll jump to reading the original software company discussions I enjoyed your discussion, and I'm picking up some Colin Ward (somehow i haven't read before). And really enjoyed your references to Landsmanshaft! Parallels some of the experiences I've had in unions, but more specifically in explicitly anarchist and non-hierarchical communities i'm part of.

By the way, Molly Crabapple's new book is all about the history of the Bund. Comes out this month.

@yaxu This is so cool.

One question, in the article here: https://talesfromthecollection.com/nintendos-nes-knitting-machine-system-a-closer-look-at-the-strange-history-oddware/ the quote at the bottom says:

One fellow at the Nintendo Booth says the machine can crank out a custom sweater in about four hours. While that may be an exaggerated, this device is a runaway hit in Japan, and Nintendo hopes it will take off here. I’m convinced this knitting software will help reintroduce the home computer to the public. John Dvorak Jan. 11, 1987 – via Howard Phillips

Maybe a mis-print because i'd assume we'd have heard about a japanese famicom one, especially if it was a 'runaway hit'?

Nintendo’s NES Knitting Machine System: A Closer Look At the Strange History [Oddware]

Nintendo’s Knitting Machine System was a fascinating NES accessory meant to help set the video game company apart from the the competition and put an end to the video game crash of 1983.

@neauoire it's not going to be recorded, but maybe i can post my notes online in some way. This is a separate thing, but I'm also working on an article with a collaborator on what makes L5 a creative coding library responding to permacomputing (and where it may not), which overlaps with this talk. If it's accepted, looking forward to sharing that.

@jsenzel@merveilles.town 22 is a lot of rules to balance! My top 5 would be:

  • panel layout reflecting signal flow
  • the hard work is making sweet spots larger
  • no modes
  • interface > features
  • feedback!

Remember the days when you had to hook up a telephone line to a modem to be able to access the Internet (I did not have the chance to live in those days, but well...)? Welcome back. This makes use of two simple reversible data channels that connect computers together: 3.5mm audio cables. The client sends a webpage request, and the server answers this request by sending the compressed HTML code of this webpage over... sound.

This page is missing some fun photos

@mtrc@mastodon.social i need to learn the API to see what i can do (for example, can i use sprites? camera?) so just used a few basic things i know from Pico-8 to test out. i did this within 2 minutes of opening it up so it's very basic! looking forward to more documentation so i can dig in further. i haven't tried demo mode yet but am assuming i can learn a lot from that too.
