been working on this max for live device that computes the complexity of the input audio signal using an algorithm called "non-sequential recursive pair substitution" written in the gen~ codebox.

in short the algo is measuring how many iterations it takes to compress the input signal buffer (1024 samples), then that's normalized between 0-1.

since feedback contains repeating oscillations which typically are of a lower complexity, this can allow you to persist feedback sweet spots by doing automatic gain control - when the complexity is low, turn gain down, and when complexity is high, turn gain up.

still in early stages but really having fun exploring. i've done some stuff with my loudspeakers but it's even fun just straight out built-in macbook microphone / speakers.

you can also map the complexity measurement onto other params so you can insert fx into the feedback loop and modify those, gets crazy quickly but still possible to tame it.

based on this paper: Shaping the behaviour of feedback instruments with complexity-controlled gain dynamics" by Kiefer, Overholt, & Eldridge

Here's my presentation for Algorithmic Art Assembly v3.0 based in reveal.js.

https://nnirror.xyz/aaa3/

I briefly explain my background and past projects and then do a deep dive on my web-based audio synthesis and live-coding system, Wax, including 6 short live-coded demos.

Then I do a performance with the audience. I ask everyone to pull up a Wax state on their phone using a QR code. This Wax state uses the device's accelerometer data to play a digital harp. We then perform music together as a "distributed electroacoustic orchestra", using animations in the presentation slides to control our motions, from which different musical structures emerge.

I am grateful the audience indulged me in this part by participating so much!

Here's a clip from my presentation at Algorithmic Art Assembly v3.0. I asked everyone in the audience to take out their phones and load a system state in Wax, the web-based audio synthesis application I've built over the last couple years.

We performed a short piece together using our phones, which were transformed into virtual harps in Wax by accessing device accelerometer data and translating that motion into harp notes.

Our motions were guided by the instructions on the presentation slides.

I am grateful for their enthusiastic participation 🙂

@williamfields yo you might enjoy this NIME paper. i've been working on a max implementation of the DSP it describes, it's a way to persist these sorts of edge of chaos feedback systems in audio. maybe there would be some analogous ways compute "complexity" in your system and then re-map that back onto params to find the goldilocks spots anyway, just a good relevant read :) https://www.nime.org/proceedings/2020/nime2020_paper66.pdf

the hi hat shuffle work in this song is so poor, producers wrote based on a 6/8 feel but didn’t notice how the 16th note straight hi hats that don’t even line up with the groove, annoys the shit out of me!

protect bernard purdie from this lazy time keeping!

@ho @williamfields oh that’s interesting, i follow. yeah, i’ve been able to get a decent implementation in gen~ which I think compiles to c++ under the hood and can handle realtime with reasonable cpu load, but definitely having potentially scores of iterations per window is questionable on cpu usage. it’d be trickier to do the STFT in gen~ but i could see that being a good approach with python or something else where you don’t have to roll your own FT code
