@winter@social.translunar.academy @foone@digipres.club as for attitude control, the ikaros held its mirrors taut by centrifugal force. the whole thing spun continuously. it did not have a frame. photon hit spinny mirror push probe how did it maintain attitude control? *liquid crystals* simply darken the side of the satellite you want to receive less force and the photon reaction goes from reflective to absorbing, meaning slightly less momentum transfer on that side, giving torque ...but it's spinning ...so does the black spot.

@winter@social.translunar.academy @foone@digipres.club i poked at this idea before, but i'm only one person the sail might still catch too much atmosphere if it deploys at only 600km, some of the first sail experiments had this problem, but it would probably take a lot of stationkeeping fuel to keep it there, which means, if you got control of it early enough you can probably bring the apogee up high enough to circularize, and once solar pressure exceeds drag, you can go anywhere

@stux@mstdn.social it's impossible to use normal held inputs to move that fast (that's what the das technique referred to) you have to push the arrow rapidly doing this was called hypertapping, and done naively, would cause repetitive stress however, nearly every player does it now with a different technique, rolling: you hold a finger over the d-pad and tap the opposite side of the controller with 3 or 4 fingers in a rapid wave motion, which is both much faster and far less strenuous
