@davidgerard@circumstances.run I was involved in a big bandwidth billing project at one big ISP and helped manage transit billing and peering settlements at another, and when another company around here was hiring somebody to manage their peering settlements I couldn’t even get a courtesy interview. Hiring was broken even before everybody lost their minds over AI.

@mayintoronto some IMAP servers support a special folder for notes that doesn't show up in your email client, but does appear in a dedicated client for notes. Like, Apple's Notes app does it, and there are ways to get an Android app to do it (viz. https://github.com/niendo1/ImapNotes3 ). That could be a way to manage cross-device syncing without paying for Yet Another Cloud Subscription.

Coding has never been about the actual writing of code. Coding is about understanding a problem, breaking it down into individual bits that you can describe programmatically (literally and figuratively), and assembling all those bits back together in a way that doesn't introduce new problems. When you outsource the programmatic bits (offshore, or to an agent) you run the risk that the solution will introduce new problems because of a mismatch in understanding. And if you're not fully reviewing and understanding the output (from an offshore contractor or from an agent), will you even know that the programmatic solution was built on a faulty understanding of the problem?

@jalefkowit@hachyderm.io I like how their official web site has stuff like how many sprocket holes each format has but not any other reference about how or why that would matter. Like, as a nerd I understand that if you’re comparing standard 70mm with 70mm IMAX that the number of sprocket holes is a simple way of specifying the whole frame area, but I still think they should have just listed frame area in square MM.

Last night at 1 AM as I was riding my bike home, a fox started to pop out from between parked cars, directly into my path in the bike lane. It jumped back out of my way, thank goodness. I’ve already run over a rat. I don’t need to find out what happens if I hit a fox. I’ve seen foxes in Petworth and Brightwood and the fancy neighborhoods of upper northwest, but this was the little stub of Florida Ave between Sherman and 10th, across from the Whole Foods. I guess urban foxes have adapted to supermarket Dumpsters?

Y’all, shingles is AWFUL. One friend of ours needed to be in a nursing home for her recovery; my wife got it before she turned 50 so she couldn’t even get the vaccine when she recovered. The data saying the vaccine reduces dementia is just a lovely bonus on top of NOT GETTING SHINGLES.

@gregatron5@vmst.io my Mac fallback has just been regular Firefox for a while now. I haven’t used Chrome in years and don’t even have a Chromium browser installed. I ran into a weird problem where the Chrome Updater process was always consuming a bunch of CPU even after a fresh reboot, and the problem persisted across a few uninstall/reinstall cycles. I tried Chrome Canary at the time and still had the same problem, so I just deleted it and never looked back. Safari was so much better at memory management by then anyway, so I didn’t miss it.

FWIW I'm not 100% against offshoring, but I'm realistic about how much more intensely an offshore contract has to be managed, and I know it doesn't actually save much money since it just shifts which costs you're bearing directly. With coding agents, there's a similar problem, only you're prompting an agent that flatters you and makes you think everything is going to be OK, while it simultaneously encourages you not to look too closely at its output. Plus you're not (yet) paying the bill for the full cost of the service you're using, because the growth phase is heavily subsidized. A company that reduces staffing levels because it's relying on subsidized agents that produce lines of code in excess of its ability to review them is digging itself into multiple holes: no current, complete understanding of the code being generated, no expertise or excess capacity available to solve problems introduced by the coding agents, and an addiction to a service that isn't going to be subsidized forever. What a mess.

We are flying to see my mother-in-law to deal with financial planning stuff. It's 5½ hours in planes each way. I'm 6'2" (1.88 m) tall. Main cabin seats are $499 per person. Upgrading to get more leg room costs an additional $198 per person, but it also includes earlier boarding and a checked bag. Should I pay extra, because it's worth it not to be grumpy before I have even laid eyes on my MIL, or should I just suck it up and pace in the aisle when I need to stretch my legs? #poll

I lock my bike up behind the bar and leave through the alley, and the alley always smells like, uh, something, so I didn’t notice quite how bad the air was until I got onto a regular street. I pulled over at the first opportunity, put on a mask, and texted my wife “air bad.” My eyes are still stinging. And this isn’t even the worst of it yet.

The ElementaryOS browser "Web" (which is Gnome Web, FKA Epiphany), is janky when scrolling in Phanpy (it jumps around and sometimes flips rapidly between the before and after states) so I thought I'd try some other browsers. Firefox doesn't let you install PWAs as apps without installing a third party extension (which has many negative reviews). Vivaldi does PWAs, but its scrolling speed is different than the system scrolling speed, and it doesn't respect two finger swipes for forward and back. Floorp is a Firefox fork that DOES have PWAs, so Floorp it is! (At least for now).

When I first moved here I lived with a friend in Crystal City. She and I were having breakfast at the Market Lunch when somebody* came around gladhanding for his campaign. We told him we lived in VA and he left us alone, but after he walked away my friend admitted she was still registered in DC and she just didn’t like him. For years after I moved into the District I used her trick and lied to canvassers, telling them I was registered in VA so they didn’t waste my time. I’m not that nice now, so people working for shitty campaigns might find out how I feel about their candidates.

  • Seems like it might have been Harold Brazil, campaigning for mayor? It could have been the elder Kevin Chavous, but I don’t think it was.

@gregatron5@vmst.io I run https://adguard.com/en/adguard-home/overview.html on my firewall, but my setup is probably more complicated than any sane person needs. I have regular non-blocking DNS for the whole network and an alias group of MAC addresses that get redirected to the AdGuard IP address by NAT rules. Also I discovered that the Chromecast is sneaky and it will reconfigure its own DNS if it can’t phone home, so that device in particular also has a NAT rule capturing DNS-over-HTTPS traffic to Google DNS.
