@mattblaze@federate.social @alyx_woodward@universeodon.com I never have, as I left the US when it became too dangerous for me (who was a German on a Green Card). I'd actually have filed for naturalization soon later, had it not been for that stuff. And that is why I am asking - I hear all possible things about how voting machines in general, and US voting machines in particular, work, but never had a chance to try one out in my life. I'd love to see online demos of them, for example.

@ewyn@mastodon.social @Perowinger94@mastodon.social @TwraSun@mastodon.social Das stimmt natürlich.

@jplebreton@mastodon.social And trust me, Waymo is one of the more "serious" players there - who at least somewhat consider safety. If even they willingly break driving laws, you know what it means for the rest of them. BTW, at least in Germany, there is a significant difference between breaking driving laws negligently and intentionally - and this kind of intentional breaking of traffic laws can quickly end up being a crime. One with prison time on it.

@mattblaze@federate.social @alyx_woodward@universeodon.com To be fair, a lot of the problems are the legal constraints of US elections, such as:

  • Previous "voter registration" with a "party affiliation". Essentially the government already knows who's gonna vote for whom! It's just a matter of time till these lists will be used for retaliatory purposes. Basically the secrecy of the vote is almost entirely undermined by this.

  • Multiple layers of "winner takes all", so only few districts actually matter.

Together this is an ideal ground for manipulation - after all, the government already knows where to manipulate to get the desired outcome!

In that sense, I find it actually quite problematic that voting machines supposedly know the voter's registration. Ideally the voting machine shouldn't even know the voter's identity - the poll workers should check that, guide the voter to the booth, and then push a button that simply makes the machine accept one ballot. If we want to rely on poll workers less, we can instead give voters after ID verification a single-use code to scan at the machine, which however has to be generated without taking voter registration or any other personal data into account (imagine a stack of those things in the office where you register).

E.g. if a machine makes it easier and faster to vote according to your registration, and if poll workers have party affiliation in their lists, then the poll workers can immediately see who voted matching their affiliation - namely, all the fast voters did. This too is a secrecy-of-the-vote issue.

More interesting manipulation can be more subtle. What if e.g. the user interface of the machines is sluggish or weird for one candidate, but works well for the other - if nothing else, can this bias the next election? What is the bias of long lines before the voting booth on the outcome? If e.g. one party is more "determined" and willing to wait in line for hours, simply slowing down the machines generally will favor that party.

And all this is way outside the mathematical-scientific aspects. One of my favorite instances of vote manipulation is actually a paper ballot; see attached image. One option doesn't look like the others - and "incidentally" got most votes. Eye catching works. It's really easy to bias the human mind. And I bet this was all fully legal by actually well intentioned voting laws (not saying the entire system there is well intentioned, but this kinda attack might work in other places too).

Donald #Trump: Oil is flowing through the #Hormuz Strait. Bernard Woolley: Actually, Mr. President, oil is most definitely not flowing through the Strait of Hormuz. Water is. If it were in fact oil that is flowing through the strait, this would constitute a major emvironmental issue. Although it is true that your voters do not care about environmental issues, no one is interested in a sea full of oil - in fact, it would lower the oil price so much that the United States cannot sell anything anymore, thereby increasing the trade deficit. #YesMinister https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/117270324606038555

@EdCates@mastodon.social @riverpunk@defcon.social @alice@lgbtqia.space @acb@mastodon.social @webhat@infosec.exchange In the US I would actually say the opposite. The self checkout lane is faster, which shows that cashiers were providing negative value to the customer. Despite the self checkout often being flaky with its dumb weight checking that often randomly kicks off because you just moved something, or did the "scan item 1, put down item 1, scan item 2, put down item 2" cycle too fast. So why do the flesh and blood cashiers perform even worse than the flaky self checkout machines? Because they're underpaid and undertrained. It's different in Germany, where cashiers are actually good at their job. The cashier is invariably faster than random customers, and they also actually know stuff. If you haven't yet, just look at how it works in Germany at an Aldi store. They usually scan or type in stuff faster than you can put it on the belt.
