I'm fascinated and inspired by the free and open web and have really enjoyed my time on the Fediverse. I'm passionate about #decentralization and censorship resistance, and like to put what I learn to practice.

Over the last few years, my gears have shifted to an intense (natural) #WeightLoss mission. I'm down over 300lbs from 570. Being so large was very difficult and I've learned a lot getting to this point.

Trying to become a decent programmer.

The pattern of fungible digital infrastructure really is quite interesting. By that I mean relays in Nostr & #DeltaChat and transport neutrality like #Mitra Mini & Manyverse.

I think "job creation engine" is a stretch considering the whole proposition is based off "we're going to eliminate so many jobs!"

Part of me thinks it's all just a misguided, desperate plea that machines will make things less messed up than the status quo. In defense of techno-utopians, the bar is pretty low.

The medical establishment will continue to lose patients and trust to shameless frauds and grifters until access improves. The best thing the healthcare institutions could do to actually protect patients and defund health misinformation would be to work on bottlenecks to care.

The e-celeb shilling fake cancer cures isn't competing with the best of the system, they're competing with what the plebs actually have to work with. When the GP gates testing behind "maybe it's just stress" the supplement salesman offers many different options to try.

But I'm sure policing niche health topics on the Internet is all that's needed to solve everything. It's definitely the alt-health blogs that people barely read moving the needle and not people's actual experiences with the system.

RE: https://ec.social-network.europa.eu/@EUCommission/116760263030804683 It's actually sad to see the EU take half-measures on the one thing they kinda do okay with: consumer protections.

Video games providers must treat consumers fairly. Under EU consumer law consumers must be informed about the duration and conditions of a video game’s lifespan. If the supply is stopped earlier than the contract states, players should be reimbursed. We will work with consumer authorities and organisations to raise awareness about these rights and their active application. 🎮 https://link.europa.eu/r3XhyM

Thank you @AidanTTIerian 355 to ~270 alone is a huge QoL boost I've noticed. I'm already in the best shape of the last decade, but I'm excited to reach the low 200s as I continue. I also think it's important you brought up the lifestyle constraints. When I started out I had a lot less going on and that definitely made getting the ball rolling a lot easier. I've lately been tackling the fact that pushing forward gets much harder when 'real life' imposes limitations. But I have also learned that a lot of the challenge is easier to deal with when you take some of the pressure off, it's the behaviors, preparation and patterns that matter, rather than the day-to-day fluctuations.

I'll admit I struggle to understand the psychology of authoritarian right people in Anglosphere nations basically licking the boot when it comes to internet censorship. Like if you had your way, you wouldn't be able to speak at all, ruled by people who still hate you. The EU seems to have a similar vein of people where they crack down on any dissent in the name of 'protecting democracy' that keeps whittling away from such moves. But principled (and rational) libertarianism seems to be a rarity if not outright contradiction these days so I can understand the confusion a bit.

@wjmaggos@liberal.city The piece raises a few important points that I've been ruminating on lately. This part was my favorite: This is the entire game. This is how "don't tread on me" becomes "Meta should be allowed to do whatever it wants." This is how the rights of the lone hacker working in their garage become indistinguishable from the rights of a multinational with a market cap larger than most countries' GDP. I've become disillusioned about how it seems that libertarianism as a whole was always a psyop to use individual liberty as a cover for establishing new rackets. Alchemise the real pains of the public (distrust of institutions, loss of freedom, etc) into highly profitable schemes and lobbying. I would still consider myself a "cyberlibertarian" generally, but I am a lot more critical of things I used to take at face value. Before reading the post I was expecting a screed decrying freedom-minded people as selfish and was relieved to see a thoughtful assessment of where thing actually went wrong. I'm definitely not in perfect alignment with the author, but I think it's a fantastic contribution to the overall discussion. Even if the fedi is doomed to fail I think it has immense value in being a demonstration of what even a moderately different paradigm would be like in practice. It is genuinely important for people to be able to experience things themselves to grasp the benefits rather than just be told what's best for them.

@cjd@pkteerium.xyz every parent and teacher I talk to IRL reports that kids are still suffering greatly from 2020/21 when we let "scientists, experts, and teachers" decide things. I'm in a big city where to not be "covid cautious" was to be a near total paraih. The parents themselves are already calling kids who aren't even in HS a "lost generation". This is all to say that the "experts" have a lot of things to work on before we start handing them more power again.

Inverse class jealousy pattern
I saw a nutty commie blog talk about this but I think it's a real thing: some of the wealthy are actually jealous of the poor in unintuitive ways, and are deeply insecure about it. One of the examples from the blog was that food that poor people rely on ends up being appropriated. But I actually think it's exemplified by the "hustle bro" CEO culture. The way you see these people with what is effectively an "e-mail job" talking about hard work and grit like they dig ditches to keep the lights on. There's this romanticized ideal that is signaled from a place that can only come from deep insecurity. Why can't someone so fabulously wealthy just say "yeah I have an easy life and it's actually a lot of fun to do cool things! "? Which is where I think it comes from the fact that the status games at high levels are immensely isolating. It all makes things that ordinary people need to survive (like trust, connection and deep social bonds) actually appear like unattainable fantasies. I think it all leads to a bizare combination of resentment and jealousy which is why you see when only moderately wealthy people have this attitude of not just disdain for the poor, but an irrational resentment against them.
