@cigitalgem @rasterweb @vees Il have to try that receptionist thing! My way of dealing with known scammers so far was to just leave my phone on mute and continue with my work. Most calls I receive don't connect the scammer until I press a key, so I'm certain it's a scam and every second they wait for an answer is a second they're not trying to scam someone else...

RE: @dangillmor@mastodon.social

@TimWardCam @GossiTheDog For some additional context the whole point of downloading every time is so they can track the CVEs, I'm basically mirroring stuff between two systems and every build gets everything for dev, QA and prod. There's a tool to track and block builds and whatnot, but they decided on going a more drastic route. But the cherry on top was even the latest version still had CVEs, because X (an oss app release) bundles lots of software and apparently just can't keep up themselves.

@TimWardCam @GossiTheDog For us the deadlines are not so much a problem, we have them but what I work on RN is all internal apps on a secured network, not the risk exposure of online web apps fortunately. But being told I have to stick to an older version with CVEs because the latest version (which fixes at least one of said CVEs) still has open CVEs is mind blowing. Like, can't we at least make progress!?

@hailey Is this like CoLinux? It was running User Mode Linux as a Windows process on XP, no virtualisation needed. Basically WSL2 way ahead of it's time! The only caveat is that it relied on both arches having compatible pointer sizes which excluded 64bit, so it was never ported to win7. On a technical aspect though WSL1 is IMHO even better than it's successor, it's literally implementing POSIX and Linux on the NT microkernel. After all NT was supposed to also run OS/2 and Xenix...

@bagder@mastodon.social the thing about OpenSSL is that it would probably win if we grouped all SSL alternatives into one, but there is just one libcurl! 😉

@kasperd@westergaard.social @bagder@mastodon.social I think the point here is ranking curl installs vs. other software, and curl is typically linked against an SSL Library so that makes the sum of SSL library installs likely greater than curl.

@mirabilos @hailey They actually fixed it, you can use host networking in recent versions. That matter a lot for me as I prefer using Vcxsrv for the X server. Theirs is broken on non-US keyboards and I don't need 3D. And besides, I've been using X apps long before WSL "supported" them. IIRC initially we could use the resolver's IP but they locked out down, and then whatever solution caused X apps to randomly disconnect. But I have it 100% stable again. Happy to share my setup when I'm home...

When your case has no PC speaker... A breadboard and a couple LEDs to see the beeps! 😀

It turns out no my clumsy CPU installation method did not break the motherboard. A DIMM was badly seated and popped out during the CPU replacement process. Rush mobo replacement order cancelled in time...

Who's the idiot that decided a PC speaker was optional?!?!?

And TIL "Speaker Out" is actually a sink, has to connect with +5v...

@mushu@social.troll.academy @morl99@hessen.social The problem is that it could give a false sense security. I'm not super familiar with vscode but I bet there are dozens ways of exploiting this, many of which are yet to be known. Blocking it all at once is the safe thing to do.

@mirabilos @hailey Well, that said WSL1 didn't come without any drawback:

  • Slower local file access (files were stored natively on NTFS, even trough a VM Linus on ext4 is faster)
  • Cross-os file changes caused weird permission/ACL issues
  • Not all Linux ABI / interfaces were implemented (and this is a moving target!)

That last point is important, for ex. Debian Trixie fails on WSL1 because new passwd locking isn't implemented in the NT kernel. New interfaces would require support too.
