Ryvoan bothy, a mountain shelter in the Cairngorms in Scotland, has displayed a copy of this poem for at least 80 years, written by a woman, AM Lawrence, from Cumbria. It came to mind tonight and as it combines trains and mountains, I wanted to share it here too:

I Leave Tonight From Euston

I shall leave tonight from Euston
By the seven-thirty train,
And from Perth in the early morning
I shall see the hills again.
From the top of Ben Macdhui
I shall watch the gathering storm,
And see the crisp snow lying
At the back of Cairngorm.
I shall feel the mist from Bhrotain
and the pass by Lairig Ghru
To look on dark Loch Einich
From the heights of Sgoran Dubh.
From the broken Barns of Bynack
I shall see the sunrise gleam
On the forehead of Ben Rinnes
And Strathspey awake from dream.
And again in the dusk of evening
I shall find once more alone
The dark water of the Green Loch,
And the pass beyond Ryvoan.
For tonight I leave from Euston
And leave the world behind;
Who has the hills as a lover,
Will find them wondrous kind.

Puolison pyörä varastettiin talon pyörävarastosta Helsingin Latokartanossa noin viimeisen viikon aikana. En usko, että saadaan sitä koskaan takaisin, mutta ohessa on kuva pyörästä puskaradiolle. Merkki on ”Scott”. Lastenistuinta ei ollut kiinnitetty silloin, kun pyörä poistettiin.

A lot of people like to lead with a financial justification for doing decent things, whether it be investing in green energy (“it’s cheaper in the long run”) or not working too much (“I am paid to work for hours per week, not more”). Please remember we can also do decent things because they are the decent thing to do – regardless of monetary considerations!

Today is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. It’s important to remember that actively working towards a welcoming safe environment for everyone in science isn’t just the decent thing to do (I’d argue it’s the bare minimum), it also means we do better science! Take, for example, this study showing underrepresented groups innovate more than their peers (but their work is not taken up by the wider community): https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1915378117 #AcademicChatter #WomenInSTEM

TIL that Software Heritage properly renders Jupyter notebooks in archived repos, including math mode TeX, see for example: https://archive.softwareheritage.org/swh:1:cnt:9e6c00391e0bae6dcfa5d80e0f986e1e5d4a85f5;origin=https://github.com/davidjamesweir/2026-lecture-demos;visit=swh:1:snp:634ff513503296f71f8cddaa4435f90451d505da;anchor=swh:1:rev:fccaa8a9526a9a8f68f891d4a98e1a9f4e663b27;path=/nucleation.ipynb

But… how can one properly archive the output of the notebooks for posterity? I’d rather not have it in the main files in the repo - or should I?

@_timemit_ As a teenager I had a few in my mum’s garden that I had bought with pocket money or persuaded other people to buy or give me… and I used to bug my dad about visiting gardens with good collections. But since then my parents have moved, I live in a flat in a different country and nothing of my little collection is left, so I can simply admire other people’s rhododendrons - and of course Rh. tomentosum, which grows everywhere here…

The single biggest piece of growing up I’ve done as an adult was realising this: When someone tells me some news I can say “how do you feel about that?” or similar, rather than telling them what I think or making assumptions about how their news makes them feel. Simple really.

Okay, help: what's a good compromise for a whiteboard for one-off use in a lecture? I want to collect student ideas, group them together and talk them through interactively while showing the whiteboard on a screen. Nothing more. For a long time I would have used Flinga Whiteboard (https://flinga.fi/) but my employer stopped paying for it. They do pay for Miro but it's horrendously complicated to use, and a steep learning curve for a one-off activation exercise in class. Is there something simple, freely available (maybe - ideally - open source) that is at the Flinga end of complexity rather than Miro? #education #EdTech #whiteboard #AcademicChatter

@skyglowberlin@fediscience.org in addition to things like arxiv, Zenodo has versioning - you can get a DOI for the deposit in general or a specific version. If you land on an old version of the deposit, a banner appears pointing you to the new version. In terms of research outputs that are peer reviewed, there are journals like Living Reviews in [X] which do a decent job of allowing authors to update their work when appropriate, so this doesn’t seem too terrible on the face of it. I’d be happy if there were publicly-owned gold OA alternatives to those journals. @brembs@mastodon.social @albertcardona@mathstodon.xyz

And one I had looked for traces of (online and in person) but come a blank until I realised it was known under a different name: Map [or Covering Ground] (1991) by Anna Best It was meant to be an upside down ’cast’ of a hilltop made in wood. I remember visiting this with my family and grandparents as a kid and being taken with how huge it seemed. https://grizedaleforestsculpturepark.wordpress.com/map/ #grizedale #sculpture

What was so obviously bad about it? The tell which meant I lost all ability to take it seriously wasn't em dashes or three-point lists or any crap like that, it was two sentences which had a perfect meter and rhyming scheme. I can't remember what they are now (and I don't want to call it out directly anyway) but it was totally unmissable when read aloud, even by a non-native English speaker. It broke the serious mood that the opening paragraph was trying to evoke, which was generally okay up to that point, even though there was some really cringeworthy imagery about (I paraphrase) the emptiness of space staring into a space station. How did I spot this, and how could I put words on it? I like to think it's because I did Higher English (i.e. one year of lukio-level English philology, for the Finns reading this). For teenage David it was an awful struggle, but for fortysomething David it gave them the words and tools they need to explain why some English texts are just more interesting than others, and why large language models write such crap. That, and it gave me a lifelong love of Norman MacCaig's poetry. https://www.scottishpoetrylibrary.org.uk/poem/basking-shark/
