@chrisoliver@indieweb.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr It should be illegal for companies to call it buying when it's clearly just a "rent-until-we-stop-caring"

@EUCommission Then stop pushing for ID verification online. Not every opinion needs to be bound to an ID. Let journalists and everyone else be anonymous if they need or want to.

@tux0r@layer8.space @ErikUden@mastodon.de To be honest, I don't know much about Lisp. So Lisp could also work for cross-platform. One important thing with web-based apps is that you can always either ship them as Electron (or maybe something newer and faster like Tauri) or as a website, which is really flexible. But I agree that web is not always the best option. And with WASM compiled cross-platform code might also become a more popular option.

@tux0r@layer8.space @ErikUden@mastodon.de What exactly do you mean? I know browsers have their own quirks, but since everybody except iOS users use Google Chrome, it's easier to manage. And I personally use Firefox, and everything still works for me.

@ErikUden@mastodon.de If a developer has to decide whether to program 5 different apps (Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS) or just one web-app that works everywhere, it's pretty clear what the choice for most is.

@_elena@mastodon.social I didn't know W Social was such a dishonest project, good to know. I won't be using it if it requires my id anyways, but I'll also warn my friends.

@lumiworx@mastodon.social @davidculley@hachyderm.io I've talked to a lot of people about that topic recently, offline and online, and I changed my mind. The commit was a bad thing and should be reversed.

@kkarhan @CStamp I have no idea if it's actually illegal here, but it's not stopping a single airline from doing it. Everybody does it.

@nixCraft I don't understand the hate here. The author talks about one example of AI being modern TTS and STT models, which would actually be great. And I am sure, that if some kind of AI agent is being brought to the table it will be easy to toggle it off. And AI agents definitely can improve workflows and make things easier. It just needs to be done the right way, and not by slapping "Copilot" ok everything.

@snep @nixCraft Okay agreed, it should be opt-in. I think it probably will be as well, since people who develop for Linux know how Linux users are, don't you think?

@RupertReynolds@hachyderm.io @chrisoliver@indieweb.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr The simplest solution is having items physically, and for digital goods without copy-protection or at least copy protection that does not need an online service. For example some Blu-Ray players have expiring licenses and at some point will stop playing Blu-Rays until you update the license. This is not acceptable. Regular DVDs are offline only, which is why I am buying them. Only downside is terrible resolution 💀

@jenniferplusplus@hachyderm.io Well have you seen the code actual humans write? Especially proprietary code? I think it's like that. And AI can write code that works. It's not good code, but it works. And that is what many people care about, that the code works.

@atax1a@infosec.exchange @jenniferplusplus@hachyderm.io Which slopbots have you tried? My current favorite slopbot ChatGPT 5.6 Sol helped me write a working activity tracker for Gnome on Wayland, which is not that easy because it didn't only need the main program with database etc to work, but also a gnome shell extension and communication between them. Using generative ai enables me to write software I wouldn't have been able to write a few years back. I don't like OpenAI or Anthropic or Google, in fact I hate them. I hate how they steal the whole internet and more to train their models, how datacenters pollute the environment and take peoples electricity and water. But the product they build does work well.

@atax1a@infosec.exchange @jenniferplusplus@hachyderm.io Yes, I don't hate it. Generative AI is a technology that people could only dream of a few years ago and it's changing the world. You cannot argue with that.

@tux0r@layer8.space @ErikUden@mastodon.de There's a lot of programming languages that run basically everywhere, but you always have to write platform-specific code. With web, the amount platform-specific code is quite low though.
