@tylersticka@social.lol Not at all, at least compared to other laptops of its era! I'll try my best to describe how I just took it apart with the image alt-texts, but first, remove the CD ROM or floppy drive from the expansion bay, then slide off the bottom cover and remove the battery. Then, follow the images:

And I am sure, that if some kind of AI agent is being brought to the table it will be easy to toggle it off

Why should it be opt-out in the first place, instead of an additional package that sloperators can install on their own in an oot-in fashion, if they wish? I'd argue having AI features being opt-out instead of opt-in is a large part of what many folks (me included) despise about the whole fad, economical and moral reasons aside.

@tylersticka@social.lol Another CF-37 owner? Never thought I'd see the day! They are such unobtanium nowadays, even info is somewhat sparse, at least last time I've looked! The CMOS battery is removable and located right next to the CPU fan under the bottom shell, I wish I knew what the connector is called though

@tylersticka@social.lol Oh hey, if it works, it works! Though I can still take a look sometime soonish at two other boards from different CF-37s I have somewhere and see if the CMOS battery is located somewhere else, maybe on the rear of the board. 'Cause now I'm also curious! And yup, there's onboard RAM (those two chips between the RAM slot and the modem miniPCI card), the slot is just an expansion for extra memory. Should be compatible with PC100 SDRAM, not sure about PC133, max. 128MB per stick IIRC

@tylersticka@social.lol And for drivers, the Canadian Panasonic Driver site is still up and offers drivers for this notebook: https://help.panasonic.ca/pw/support/SoftwareQuery.aspx?lang=en (Especially the touchscreen driver is interesting, because it took me until I found that specific site one day to realize this thing has a resistive touch screen! At least all four models I've owned this far :P)

why do anything else

Getting a feeling for the price domain registrars offer a domain for is often also important for the choice of which domain to go with, as some seemingly not special sounding domains can come back as "special" or "desirable" or something and cost a good chunk more

@CursedSilicon Ah yes:

These CRFs can only be used with select Intel processors/chipset on systems/motherboards that is specifically designed to support it.

Thanks Intel, very cool.

@bloody_albatross@chaos.social @neuralex@neurodifferent.me @marmarta@chaos.social Which Linux file manager actually does display a list of files you're about to delete instead of just ellipsing them into "n files will be deleted"? I can't remember ever seeing one doing that!

@CursedSilicon Side note, definitely not from AI but from my own (painful) experience wirth CNVi chips: Your motherboard and chipset also need to be designed to support CNVi M.2 modules and I've had a few laptops and desktop motherboards over the years that didn't, at or post-8th gen Core i CPU. I'm sure laptops fare better than desktops, though CVNi is still more annoying than it's worth dealing with over the PCIe+USB counterparts

@bloody_albatross@chaos.social @neuralex@neurodifferent.me @marmarta@chaos.social Interesting! On my KDE installation, emptying the trash with 2 files in it does just say "Do you want to permanently delete all items from the Trash?" instead of listing the files, however enabling the confirmation for putting stuff in the trash, that does show a list of files. Seems like even software on Linux is rather inconsistent in when and how to list files that will be removed 🤔

@uriel Ah, so they have their own internal guidelines as to what constitutes a datacenter, but there isn't a central definition from some kind of standards body that has coined the term with the requirement to separate buildings with independant power supplies, safe distances etc.?

You never need to do a system upgrade

More like, there's constant system upgrades, that's how it was when I was an active Arch user. With every single-package-update or installation came a whole slew of other package upgrades.

And btw, the tricky system upgrade on Debian is changing the codename (e.g. from bookworm to trixie) in the sources.list files and doing apt update + apt dist-upgrade. For those living on the edge, Debian Sid works a lot more closely to Arch :)
