even if there's some reason this isn't a genuine shakedown, i sure FEEL like i've been scammed. i didn't pay just for repairability, i paid for a long-life product that i thought i would have for years BECAUSE it was repairable IN THE EVENT of failure- there's a difference. Repairable design is no good if the thing needs to CONSTANTLY be repaired. That still helps no one. knowing now that failure was not an event, but a design guarantee ruins the entire fucking point of it being repairable. a business thinkpad is repairable, but it also doesnt break on purpose to offset the cost of repairability.

Does anyone know what's a good way to get semi-cheap USB drives in bulk that aren't basically faulty out of the factory?

I live in Australia, and we're pretty much about to enter an information dark age over here, with ID verification demanded by almost the entire internet here- while feeding the ID verification stack through a government-owned proprietary digital ID system.

SO, I want to start keeping a stockpile of USB flash drives with TailsOS flashed to them, along with a hand-manual of sorts for regular people to get started with understanding it and learning to use Gnome through it.

That way, i can start giving these to everyone i'm acquainted with to continue to hide their traffic online when discussing anything our fucked government deems "sensitive" in some capacity.

They do not need to be large- 16gb or even 32gb is MORE than enough for a majority of people's use cases for Tails. Most people probably won't even have any encrypted storage on their setup.

I have no idea how to source things like this, so i'd appreciate the information!

we really need to get better at remembering switching is a thing we can do.

pearl got externally reminded earlier after hours of horrific lethargy and ended up switching completely involuntarily after the reminder. like "oh, right! naptime :3"

@IngaLovinde@embracing.space @Mimesatwork@wandering.shop @butchrobot@shork.nerdmusic.net i GENUINELY NEVER THOUGHT anyone would even actually contemplate that without immediate dismissal but it really does seem to make FAR TOO MUCH SENSE TO ME and most people will consider you literally genuinely insane for so much as considering it, let alone making it a public discussion i dont see most other animal building rooms to hide where they fuck. in fact, they probably fuck LESS where they sleep than ANYWHERE ELSE. i'm no animal expert, so this isn't an "expert opinion" in any sense, but it's just a pattern i feel like i'm aware of. and why WOULD they? sex is a thing LITERALLY (almost) EVERYONE EVER will fucking do, and is something so biologically basic and fundamental that i can't fathom the shame people have surrounding it. kink as a whole is an INCREDIBLY healthy way of engaging with your identity, or with trauma, or with a multitude of things, and it's almost consistently a universally life-changing experience to be able to express one's self openly in that way it is INCREDIBLY common alone for people to want to see others and/or be seen by others, having sex, EVEN by those who have been forced into viewing sex with aggressive shame- so you then have to consider WHY said people are "shaming themselves" into repressing things for no reason, instead of creating spaces where that behaviour IS accepted at which point you have to consider the part that sexual repression and frustration and isolation play in the current fascist-capitalist hellscape we live in and the greater concept of a self-sustaining patriarchy

@IngaLovinde@embracing.space @Mimesatwork@wandering.shop @butchrobot@shork.nerdmusic.net BASICALLY EXHIBITIONISM IS ANARCHIST PRAXIS AND I AM SCREAMING. Jokes aside, a lot of people would deadass lynch you for it being a "threat to children" or intent to groom, but let me fucking ask them this; IF THE PEOPLE THAT FUCKING GROOMED ME WHEN I WAS FIFTEEN COULD HAVE JUST GONE SOMEWHERE AND ACTUALLY FUCKED, WHO WOULD HAVE BEEN THERE TO GROOM ME? a majority of sexual abuse and harrassment on the internet comes as a result of deep and violent sexual repression, and i have personal experience with that fact, both as a victim, and as someone who hurt others myself as a result the amount of times others, and in the end myself, talked about increasingly consequential and increasingly dangerous and reprehensible things being "hotter" because there was no healthier outlet, was, and continues to be disturbing. that's often WHY teenagers end up victimised anyway- because it's "wrong", because they're expected not to, because it gives the other party power to express themselves without contest, without responsibility i was hurt, and hurt people, because my confusion and fear was channelled by the internet into that behavior, because i was repressed and confused and didn't understand the way i felt and didn't understand my own gender and didn't feel safe irl. if i knew what being trans was because of real-world education, i and others would have been spared. if others didn't judge what being trans was because of real-world education, i and others would have been spared. IF THE OTHERS ONLINE HAD A PUBLIC SPACE TO JUST GO FUCK, I WOULD HAVE BEEN SPARED. the reason i mention all of those things? well, because the throughline there is "things people will say you're a pedophile for endorsing"

RE: internet politics? firefox
also i'm going to be the first person to say i don't hate the Nova redesign in testing... It's far better than the previous UI, though that's not a high bar to clear. I really wish they still had the older UI circa the Trapezoidal tabs era, but that seems like a no-brainer. In comparison to now, i think the design is far better. I'm a sucker for Vertical tabs, but hate the single-width topbar, and enabling the Title bar is ugly as sin on the current window design- but even with my normal Lavender theme on it, the new design with the titlebar looks really nice. The titlebar color is consistent in the gaps between all the panels, so it doesn't just have a hard cutoff line. Examples below [Current 1st, Nightly + Nova 2nd]

RE: the memory of the Holocaust, antisemitism
@talya@dybbuk.club that said, your post also does raise a FANTASTIC way to place the ongoing attempt at trans genocide into perspective that i hadn't considered. Obviously, genocide is by definition far, far deeper than simple blatant mass-murder- yet i find it far, FAR too common for people to deny the concept of a genocide of trans people on the basis that they aren't marching them out in the streets and murdering them. No- but they are destroying research (AGAIN, ALSO HAPPENED IN ACTUAL WW2 LOL), manufacturing a total media void that functionally allows them to manipulate and erase all elements of trans culture, discourse and stories related to us, building legal frameworks in which trans people can easily be marched out onto the street into camps once their current scapegoat of athletes and immigrants fails them, and once deportation is no longer an option for them- they will just as soon switch as the Nazis switch to the tasteless option once the "culturally acceptable one" no longer serves their needs. The only thing preventing this from happening with total success is the internet- and maybe that's the point of people like this? But i'm sorry, fuck you, a failed genocide is still a genocide. Do we need to forgive these monsters and not march them into a room and pump them full of lead like we would have for Hitler because "the internet saved us anyway"? Would Hitler have been forgiven if the holocaust happened today because his victims might have had the resources to mobilise and either escape or survive the onslaught because of the internet? Unfortunately i answered my own case just before, which is to say "anyone suggesting anything along these lines is beyond reason and is a tool of the fascists and should be met with bullets once the day for "Reason" to die comes along, same as they would have done to us"

Upon further testing, i discovered the titlebar colormatch might have been a fluke, due to my use of a light theme during the day Dark themes don't seem to match, unfortunately Wonder if it's feedback that'd be acceptable by Firefox- or if they even can control that at all Seems reasonable to have Panel gaps match system theme regardless of the Browser theme (Or to at least include it as an option?)

RE: death
@uwuspace@catgirl.global @memdmp@catgirl.center if only we had more to say. we aren't nearly active or engaged enough on here to have known it- or most others- in much capacity. i'm sure we've seen it in passing, in the past. though, that's all it takes. it's an incomprehensible feeling looking at its profile, seeing its profile picture of what i can only imagine is one of its own plushies. a photo from behind the hands of someone who will never use those hands for good again. i wouldn't be so insensitive as to compare my experience as an alter and with my identity to its' having passed on, and the impact it has had on others. but death means much to me nevertheless. my thoughts are with it, with those who now live on without it, and i will hold it, and those close to it, in my memories. may it rest in peace. and may this mark on the world remain forevermore. may none be able to deny who and what you were. -anima

RE: the memory of the Holocaust, antisemitism

@talya@dybbuk.club "it's still here" is so universally applicable it's not even funny. we can talk all we want about the lasting ramifications of the holocaust on the ethnic minorities it targeted, but the reality is- most people see it as an event, a kill count going up for the sheer sake of ideological control and scapegoating.

but even on that basis, it endures. that basis endures to this day.

i don't mean to be dismissive at all, by the way- unfortunately i'm not jewish and know next to nothing of jewish culture and history and the way it was affected and is still affected by the holocaust. so i can't speak for this perspective at all. but i don't think i have to, to point out just how horrifically apt that statement is.

but i think i CAN speak for the way most white fucks like me think, which is the above. a war of wrath and pride, where a powerful man weaponised the growing fear and uncertainty of his people in the name of an ever-increasing kill count built to justify and perpetuate its own fear. a fight they're always "losing" to "the enemy", as told by their masters. a kill count targeting people on ideological bases that can be reduced to catchphrases and media blackouts that mean they never got a chance to fight back.

that is what WW2, and the third reich, is to most (not all) white people with no notable ethnic background.

You don't NEED to know anything about jewish history and culture to be able to openly acknowledge, IT'S STILL HERE. (you definitely should though and i'd like to learn more if i didn't have so much mentally on my plate to begin with, and if it wasn't for being information i likely would poorly retain anyway. x_x)

I do love this post regardless, i like seeing this perspective more than you could imagine and it's far too rare to see people talk about it. It's just funny, those first few sentences of your post- when from even the most white possible of perspectives considering almost no ethnic history at all, it's so terrifyingly and abundantly obvious, that anyone still saying those kinds of horrific things was never going to listen. If they can't look at the single most blindingly obvious analogue i just gave, comprised of;

  • no ethnic background
  • almost no history knowledge (thanks, repression, i dont get to remember basic highschool history)
  • very very few friends of any ethnic background
  • and very little time to research and contemplate any of this

then there was never any shot at them understanding this complex perspective respective of ethnic history and the deeper nature of genocide.
