@gsuberland@chaos.social @matildalove@wetdry.world @valpackett@social.treehouse.systems correction - if the device does not have anything at all (as in, no resistors on CC lines), a compliant power source will not present any voltage. This is one of the core safeties of USB C - since you can connect two sources together, no USB-C source should apply any voltage unless it is sure that the other side is a sink and will accept it (this is also part of the reason why all USB-C to USB-A cables only have plugs but not ports - a source can tolerate 5V on the input from a USB-C unaware power source, but only if it knows not to apply the power itself). Also, this lives purely on the USB-C side of things, USB PD specs only get into the active communication stuff that happens after the passive, resistor based negotiation is established.

@quad@akko.quad.moe so the result is probably: nobody seriously looks at this any more than "ha lol it's stupid", drafts expires, the end. Unless the author actually tries to push it through (they haven't come to mailing lists for that yet), that's gonna be about the total amount of time wasted on this.

@bovine3dom@masto.ai basically yes, though as I said, T is the "guaranteed to not cause problems ever" gauge, in practice there's a bunch of out of gauge wagons that regularly run, and I think the new Stadler FLIRTs we got are also technically out of gauge. In Lithuania, up to level 2 of bottom out-of-gauge-ness, level 3 of side, and level 2 of top is allowed in regular service (as in, without extra checks), and only above that does it need separate planning. Here's the schemas for the out of gaugeness standards for the bottom section, and side and top second and third levels if you wish to add what's realistically possible instead of the statuatory minimum 😉 (and also the base T gauge if you don't) (wrt LV and EE - they probably also have some similar levels that are always accepted but I don't know them, though you could probably find that in their public access docs)

@bovine3dom@masto.ai @kaat0@fediscience.org seems good, but now that I see the comment that these are all kinematic gauges I'm not sure using the S gauge is correct, since that is the structure gauge. Though it's not like there's a kinematic gauge either, the T gauge for the wagons themselves is a static gauge, so it's once again comparing apples with oranges

@quad@akko.quad.moe I mean that's very much the difference between home IoT and commercial IoT the stuff at work that we have sending more considerable amounts of data are pretty much on a regular 5G plan because while it isn't quite a constant 100kbps+ stream, it's around there and it sometimes bursts

@quad@akko.quad.moe well you do have a fairly well geographic area of operations in which you can set that up which while for us is technically the case as well, because of reasons it's much much more practical to just use regular public provider for stuff that moves (for IoT purposes) Though the port here set up their own 5G network, core and all, for port companies to use (in partnership with a larger 5G ISP but still).

drugs, adhd, sleep fuckery
@mei@donotsta.re so, have you considered just no sleep I often can't get sleeping if the day hasn't been "hard enough", so it's not uncommon for me to just tank the next day without proper sleep (note that just resting in bed, even if you don't sleep still helps), and because that's exhausting I then go to sleep once there's no more requirements of me being awake (so like 5-6pm). This is far from a great solution, but you don't skip stuff, and only have to deal with like 30h awake periods, which IMO are not great but still manageable.

@quad@akko.quad.moe a whole bunch of nodes, repeating messages, forming a mesh it is very much useless without a bunch of people contributing to make the mesh. wrt bloat - unless you have a quite large amount (more than like 50) of nodes in the same area it's still kinda ok with meshtastic but does get out of hand with more, while meshcore does stuff differently and requires there to be some fixed, internet-connected repeaters to limit the amount of bloat

Replying to
@bovine3dom@masto.ai sure, but the structure gauge in this case is way bigger than what the theorethical kinematic gauge would be because there is such a thing as standardized out-of-gauge operations here, with standard measurements for how out of gauge something is, etc. The structure gauge gives you a ton of headroom to put bigger things on the train if needed, the problem is (most of the time) actually other trains on nearby tracks. But if you plan for it, you can run out of gauge trains regularly, it just has to be ensured during planning that you're not going to pass by other out of gauge trains in places where that would result in problems. In this schema, the inner white area is the T static gauge, and the outer black line the S structure gauge. The shaded areas is how much bigger you could potentially get
