but surely by denying them financial security, housing security, health care, and basic pleasures, we are incentivising them to stop being poor. if we let them have nice things how will they be motivated to make something of themselves @broadwaybabyto@zeroes.ca #Neoliberal #Austerity #FuckYouIveGotMine #BlameTheVictim #MeritocracyMyth #TINA

I'd be happy to compromise at “application” because that's a more narrow, accurate term for what they are @bencourtice@aus.social. I'm also glad that the obvious power grab by Apple, to call them “app” and then attempt to claim an “app store” can only be owned by Apple, has failed. @eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place

Searching for “fedi22” or other things about the People directory, often leads to posts that encourage going to https://fediverse.info/explore/people or maybe adding query parameters to that. But when I visit that URL, I get a 404 Not Found response. Can you please restore the route for that URL, maybe as a redirect to whatever it's been replaced by? The old URLs should still work, if the directory “explore” feature remains relevant. @dansup@mastodon.social

The trouble we always encounter is, people *also* want the software to *do* something. No one has figured out how to make software that always does the right thing, never does the wrong thing, and is still useful enough that people want it. @stilgherrian@eigenmagic.net

@brianvastag@mas.to

I had a lot of friends who loathed sending invoices. I really do not get it at all.

As someone who also hates sending invoices, I get it.

For many people the point of doing the work is the satisfaction of doing good work.

Sending invoices (and the further work entailed: figuring out how much to charge, counting the hours and materials and other costs accurately, describing it accurately for an invoice in some accounting system, following up, reporting, etc.) is all a soul-muddying chore, necessary only because of the need to earn an income. It can even sap the desire to do good work.

“Sending this message was important to us. We considered ourselves to be a powerful culture. Resisting AI

Resisting AI - An Anti-fascist Approach to Artificial Intelligence; Artificial Intelligence (AI) is everywhere, yet it causes damage to society in ways that can’t be fixed. Calling for the restructuring of AI, Dan McQuillan sets out an anti-fascist approach that replaces exclusions with caring and outlines new mechanisms that support collective freedom.

Your cursive is fine and legible @ellane, my difficulty in reading it is entirely due to lack of practice. I was *taught* cursive and wrote it for years as a child. Switched to block writing as rapidly as I could due to greater legibility (And not ever using a nib pen, I suppose). Cursive writing like yours, that would not have bothered me at all when 20 years old, now takes some effort to decipher, because that muscle has atrophied.

Completely the opposite, for me @danirabbit@mastodon.online. A web app is one written to work with the program I already know how to use: the web browser on any device I choose. I can block ads, I can use all the input affordances I already took the time to set up on my device, I can copy and paste and apply styles, I can block any horrible snoopy shit. A device-specific app? That's just a web page which is attempting to stop me from doing any of those things, and force the vendor's crappy re-implementation of the UI already well implemented in the browser. #YourAppShouldBeAWebApp

Hear hear @ThistleArts@mastodon.art with the important caveat that you need to *engage as a person*. Don't treat social media as your marketing channel; you're talking directly to individual humans. We can smell marketing crap and we hate it. If you want to get blocked and hated and mocked, use it one-way like a dumb marketing channel. If you want actual engagement from people interested in what you do, be *human* here. You're interesting and real, so show that.

@Sheril Many of those publicly worrying about "extinction of humans" for AI, don't mean what you or I might mean by that term.

They do not, ultimately, care about terminal extinction — about whether our species itself continues to exist or not. To the contrary, [they see it as] good, because that would indicate that we have progressed to the next stage in our evolution, which may be necessary to fully realize the techno-utopian paradise they envision.

@bob_zim@infosec.exchange, I would bet money that no system which does something of interest to @stilgherrian@eigenmagic.net has been formally verified to the complete degree you say. Which is why my description includes the requirement that the software does something people are interested in. Yes, there might exist formally-verified systems with no detectable bugs; but likely that doesn't describe any system we directly use.

@ThistleArts@mastodon.art

that seems pretty obvious […] there’s no way your getting followers and support unless you’re actively present as a human being

I wish it were obvious to everyone yes. Sadly, a lot of people seem to believe they're getting blocked merely because they promote their work

when they're getting blocked because they use social media as a marketing channel, and people don't want one-way marketing crap in their feed.

It's entirely feasible to promote your work on Mastodon and engage with people as people. More creators need to do it that way.
