i am Australia's favourite tech reporter. Contact me at https://www.cameronwilson.com.au
I've started as the ABC’s national AI tech reporter, after 5 unreal years at Crikey. AI is one of the biggest stories of our time. The sheer amount of money, influence and hype makes it ripe for critical, nuanced and accessible reporting.
Got a story about Aussies and AI? wilson.cameron@abc.net.au
Australia's cyber security co-ordinator just dropped what I think will be a very useful reaction meme
well wrap me in a flag and smear some vegemite on my face, i'm feeling bloody patriotic seeing global investors pouring money into Australian bonds because our economy is less vulnerable to AI disruption because we're dummies who can only dig things out of the ground and sign up for mortages
Scoop: Three months into Australia's ban, new data given to Crikey suggests that most teens who were on social media pre-ban are still on those platforms.
While it's just one data point, it adds to early evidence suggesting that there's widespread flouting of the ban.

NEW: The privacy regulator raised concerns Australia teen social media tech trial "overstated" how well these technologies protected people's privacy — especially since it didn't technically test the products' privacy protections or assess them against Australian privacy law.

i'm not as good as some at spotting AI writing, but it's funny how often I find myself immediately automatically skimming/skipping ahead of writing that i later find out is (suspected) AI slop. it just has a distinctive lack of grip that makes it slide across your eyeballs without being ingested.
shout out to the australian war memorial media team who probably got an astronomical open rate for the media release about its new exhibition

one of my rules in life is try to avoid writing things that others will describe as a “manifesto” or “screed”.
POV: you’re my phone and I’m sending a good morning message
We're now finding out that as many as 70,000 people had their government IDs provided to prove their ages leaked by Discord. Like I wrote last week, this is an inherent risk (and made greater by a rushed process) of getting platforms to do age checks

YouGov has put out some polling on Australians' reactions to the teen social media ban a month in that shows that people broadly believe it is having a positive effects on cyberbullying, exposure to harm content and mental health:
Exclusive: The Albanese government offered to pay pro-teen social media ban group 36 Months to promote policy.
Weeks before the ban began, 36 Months answered a selective departmental invitation to pitch "communications services" to promote the ban, but was unsuccessful.
