They state that LLMs "must abide by our instructions (AGENTS.md)". Of course, we have uncountable examples of "guardrails" being trivially circumvented, both intentionally and unexpectedly. As @olivia@scholar.social, Marcela Suarez, and @Iris@scholar.social say in Towards Critical Artificial Intelligence Literacies: "Guardrails may seem sensible, giving the impression of responsibility, but critical computational thinking through formal analyses reveal they are unimplementable." https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.17786243 And as @davidgerard@circumstances.run recently reported, it seems that AGENTS.md files don't do much beyond giving a pseudo-IaC aesthetic to your "make no mistakes" prompts. https://pivot-to-ai.com/2026/08/27/your-agents-md-file-doesnt-actually-do-anything/ Hilariously, their AGENTS.md includes a legal section with the impossible prompts... "All contributions to this repository must be compatible with the Apache 2.0 license [...] contributions cannot include code licensed under the terms of the GPL, AGPL or LGPL licenses." Other sections include a few formatting and testing/validations prompts. 3/💩

We get the typical "slop can be good sometimes" for a vaguely defined set of use cases... "AI tools can sometimes be beneficial, particularly when it comes to finding patterns among a large data set (entire code base), performing tedious repetitive changes or large refactoring/re-organization." and also this gem... "AI tools are treated the same as traditional tooling like sed, awk or coccinelle." which is a reversal of how they treated LLMs in their previous "No Large Language Models (LLMs) or similar AI tools" statement: "All contributions to this project are expected to be done by human beings or through standard predictable tooling [...] LLMs and similar predictive tools have the annoying tendency of producing large amount of low quality code with subtle issues which end up taking the maintainers more time to debug than it would have taken to write the code by hand in the first place." Maybe they conflated "predictable tooling" with "predictive tools" (already a slightly sinister framing). And I guess subtle code issues are no longer a concern, since they're only suggesting that LLMs are useful for "boring grunt work" like (checks notes) "large refactoring" 🤦‍♀️ well, I'm sure the subtle issues will never slip past review. 2/🤡

You may have caught that the new policy requires that PRs are submitted by humans. In both the policy and the AGENTS.md, they make it clear that "only human beings can ever be credited within commit messages." This is enforced with a GitHub action that checks for commit authors containing (aider|anthropic|claude|codex|copilot|devin|gemini|grok|openai) ... so people actually named Claude or Devin get flagged as policy violators by a failed action, as do people with an email containing "raider" and people working for ngrok and using a company email. 🤪 https://github.com/lxc/incus/blob/main/.github/workflows/commits.yml#L18-L46 This effectively implements a "don't ask, don't tell" policy for LLM use. While the policy does discourage "unguided use of [LLM] tools" and states that "inability to prove understanding of the code contributed will result in a loss of trust in that contributor by project maintainers which can then lead to exclusion from any further contribution to the project", this policy also obscures which contributions involved the use of LLMs. This might explain why I didn't notice the policy change sooner, and why I haven't seen anyone posting about it. One of the most immediate indicators of potential vibecoded contributions is the warning message at the top of a GitHub repo when a user you've blocked has been included as a commit author. This also means that we have to assume that LLMs have been used since at least June 16th when the policy change was committed. Where obscuring the fact that your contribution was vibecoded was a bannable offense in the previous policy, it's now the recommended way to vibecode. It seems that this approach is intended less as a way to obscure LLM contributions and more as a (likely flimsy) legal maneuver to avoid potential liability related to licensing, given that it's a legal grey area. Nonetheless, the issue remains. 4/🫩

replacing "AGI" with "society collapsing" in "ai" booster PR statements is fun... “If we fast-forward a couple of years, and we look back and say, ‘When was it, really, that society collapsed?’ I think it’s going to be about this time, and I think it might be about this model,” OpenAI president Greg Brockman said during a Thursday press briefing. Later in the call, he added, “For me personally, I do think we’re there … I think it’s not unreasonable to feel that we are now in the society collapsing era.”

One of my haunts when I lived in San Francisco was The Gangway - a small dive bar in the Tenderloin where a boat's hull hung over the bar, and also one of the oldest queer bars in the city. There were some ancient regulars there, each with a million tales that could capture your attention all day long. One day, one of them was telling me (paraphasing here), "back before 'born this way' caught on, we were fucking everybody... tons of guys who never would've identified as gay, and who were mostly into women, were still down to fool around. Once 'born this way' spread, the scene dried up. Guys suddenly stopped having sex with us because doing so would mean that they were immutably gay, and they just weren't." What was once a world of fluidity hiding within a culture of intolerance had been binarized. Queerness was simultaneously naturalized and, through its positionality, maintained as subordinate, less natural. 2/6

on a related note, I'm super excited to read Beans Velocci's new book, "Sex Isn't Real: The Invention of an Incoherent Binary", which explores the research histories that contributed to the biologization of male/female sex categories. When I said that "gay gene"/"trans brain" research is inspired by eugenics, I mean it very literally... the gender binary was codified into biological science in eugenics labs. https://www.dukeupress.edu/sex-isnt-real

This is why queer liberation requires the destruction of essentialism, immutable categories, and the biologization of queer identities. They uphold a culture of intolerance and exclusion masked as assimilationist acceptance. They inform doomed quests to find a neurological or genetic cause of queerness - a line of research clearly inspired by eugenics. The naturalization of queerness got us here. The denaturalization of sex/gender and sexuality categories as a whole is the way forward. All that to say, maybe some of y'all cishets should kiss more people whom you typically wouldn't. 6/6

I know so many women who don't identify as lesbian, or even as bi/pan, but who have had sexual experiences and romantic relationships with other women. I also know many women who, especially in recent years, have made similar statements to the one in the quoted post above. I wonder how many women who have accepted virtual celibacy would see themselves as still having opportunities for pursuing sexual or romantic encounters after eschewing men, were it not for narratives of sexuality being immutable. 3/6

How many times have you heard closeted or coming out queers say things like "but I don't think I want to be super flaming/butch/etc"? How many times have you heard the assimilationist recommendation, "you can just be a 'normal' guy who happens to be gay... an Anderson Cooper kind of gay"? People who believe the immutability framing still have an understanding of gender and sexuality as assemblages that include cultural elements, even if they don't recognize it. "If I'm gay, do I have to be rainbows and glitter and fierce?" Bioessentialism just can't hold water for our lived experiences, even without visiting the graveyard of failed attempts to find neurological and genetic bases for queerness. 4/6

Those assimilationist refrains are, of course, a reinforcement of the bioessentialist narrative - "culture is ephemeral, your unfortunate biology is the only thing gay about you." It's a facet of western, colonial attitudes of white/cishet/male identities and cultures being unquestionably legitimate while all others are subject to scrutiny. You may be "born this way", it might even be a part of some god's grand plan, but you're still not as natural as the straights. What were simply unnatural acts before "born this way" are now the symptomology of a naturalized-as-unnatural being. I'm not saying that sexual preferences, likes and dislikes are fundamentally fungible, invalid, or problematic. They're definitely more fluid than they're usually given credit for though, and, through the construction of immutable sexual identities, have been made intelligible within a framework of coloniality that produces systems of domination. 5/6

if your conception of "AI literacy" in any way involves adopting the products and narratives of eugenicist technocrats whose proposed solution to the polycrisis is "and then a literal deus ex machina will show up and fix everything", then you're 100% fucking signs your name with an X, lost in the train station "AI"-illiterate and have no business developing a so-called "literacy framework" here

@Xavier@infosec.exchange we clearly have different commitments in this domain. I specifically asked for critical scholarship related to library work, not search terms or research initiatives that aim to affirm "ai" boosterism in any capacity. i firmly stand by the position that there is no responsible way to use generative "ai" in this context, for a variety of reasons, and my intended approach toward addressing its inevitable usage is one of harm reduction rather than giving credence, however conditional, to its usage. your reply wasn't asked for or welcome. hence, no.
