RT: @SpiritOfAttlee This is the whole argument in two sentences. “Difficult decisions” always means the same thing. The nurse pays. The renter pays. The man with a heat pump invoice pays. The men with the £72 million do not. Holborn is not a student protest. It is the first chance to put a Green leader on the floor of the Commons and force Labour to stop governing like Starmer. Zack is not inevitable just because he is nice. He is inevitable because every other option has already told you who the difficult decision is for.

Our Goldman Sachs prime minister Mark Carney has been talking about implementing austerity measures to 'help' the Canadian economy. In fact austerity only ever helps the profits of the capital class at the expense and suffering of the rest of us. Italian economist Clara Mattei: “Capitalism has been imposed on us by a tiny elite since the beginning. Liberal democracy is really only a superficial façade. When people rise up against the capitalist system liberals and fascists are best friends to implement austerity.” #Austerity #Capitalism #MarkCarney

#FollowTheMoney 🧵 11/n Another key area money flows away from are local councils and social services and, therefore, the young and, again, community. In Birmingham, whose council declared bankruptcy in 2023, provisions for children will be cut by £52m in 2024-25 and £63m in 2025-26; youth services by £2.3m; and eleven community centres are being sold off. As John Harris says: The state is abandoning its people #UKPolitics #Birmingham #Austerityhttps://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/mar/17/birmingham-britain-state-cuts-austerity-local-services

#FollowTheMoney 🧵 14/n Just realised the title of this really excellent article by Sam Knight is actually perhaps the real theme of this 🧵: What Fourteen Years of Conservative Rule have Done to Britain As Sam says, #Austerity is not even talked about so much anymore, but it has just broken the #UK . Please do read the whole piece, so well written, so damning (and I’ve even managed to ignore an aside criticism of Corbyn - usually makes me hate any writer! 😊) https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2024/04/01/what-have-fourteen-years-of-conservative-rule-done-to-britain

Research shows that growth-oriented strategies accompanied by redistribution policies are the most promising path to recovery across the Global South. Rather than imposing cookie-cutter #austerity programs, the International Monetary Fund ( #IMF ) should be following the evidence. https://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/imf-austerity-trap-time-for-course-correction-by-kevin-p-gallagher-and-njuguna-s-ndungu-2026-04

Question: so what is it like living in the 6th richest/largest economy in the world? CNN: “The poorest fifth of the population are now much poorer [in the UK] than most of the poorest countries in central and eastern Europe,” says @MyStephanomics. “They would be better off in quite poor countries in the European Union.” After 14 years of #tory and 1 year of #Labour #austerity, UK families now are at the spending level of Slovakia and are set to decline to below Poland in 2-3 years.
