I am Bersl. I am a nerdy raccoon of 40 years who lives in a messy dumpster while the world crumbles around.

I used to help maintain a big ole' pile of Perl (mostly) for a living, until my lack of enthusiasm for The Bot earned me a lay-off. The rest of tech is leaving me in the dust. I'm kind of okay with that. Sometimes the muses are kind to me and let me write poetry. etiam aliquando Latine lego vel dico vel scribo. Poni poni poni poni poni.

Art history YouTuber "A Brush with Bekah" is seeking input from furries in order to portray us fairly on a video about anthropomorphic animal art:

https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxDE90aDs2PlC4BJ8MvwoGSR7yqqzCM6QX

Based on her previous works, I believe her motives are genuine, but do with this information what you will.

@kirakira@furry.engineer I always feel that UI/UX people are gaslighting me when they state that modality (e.g., vi) is bad but context sensitivity is somehow good, when they're the same thing, except that the former is explicit about what it will do, while the latter is mostly implicit.

@foone@digipres.club When you run the master executable of recent versions of the Dovecot (IMAP, etc.) server, it immediately exec()s the helper CLI program responsible for parsing the configuration file(s) with a special format flag and an (undocumented) argument pointing back to the master executable, compiles the parsed configuration into its in-memory representation and saves it to a file in /var/run or /run, then re-runs the master executable with an (undocumented) environment variable which indicates which file descriptor represents this binary file. Only then does it start spawning configured subprocesses to begin normal service.

@Draekos@yiff.life This feels uncomfortably like the way X11 window managers often work by giving input focus to whichever window currently has the mouse pointer over it. (It's a behavior I actually prefer, because it lets me be precise about which window I want to have focus, but it is often deemed confusing for those who come from Windows or Mac, so of course all the Unix haters rag on it; plus you can argue that it doesn't make sense in a world where support for multiple cursors / multi-touch is required.) I don't know enough about the way Wayland works, but it feels like the compositor being used might be doing the same sort of thing accidentally, or perhaps the input driver supporting the tablet is directing the command stream to windows on the wrong display.

I have once again reminded Mozilla that its traditional user base remains the only set of people outside the project who actually give a shit whether their software is any good, and that at least from my perspective, each mention of "AI" from them reminds me why I stopped funding Firefox.

Answering their surveys is a duty.

@funbreaker @soatok @drikanis For the same reason I sometimes go out of my way to not-implement some reasonable suggestions the force-enabled sparkling autocomplete provides on my PRs at work: reactance. When you don't like who or what the source of the advice represents, it is hard to admit outwardly that it is correct, *especially* when you know that it is correct.

Yes, YouTube, please do show me a video about an aspect of something militaristic humans do to (other militaristic, usually) humans who don't follow rules. I totally wanted that thumbnail burned into my mind.

@elgregor@social.librem.one Yes, but Mozilla's long history of doing things that piss off its long-standing users and historical allies has to be taken into account. They could have chosen not to lean into the buzzwords. They could have chosen to release these as extensions (there are probably halfway-decent technical reasons they didn't). But no, they had their newest corporate dipshit come out and use the term "AI browser" to describe what they want Firefox to become. They woke up that day and yet again chose violence.

@mttaggart cPanel has shipped with automatic updates enabled for a very long time. Typically, when systems don't update, either the administrator turned them off, or some piece of critical software supplied by the distro is so obsolete that the newer cPanel releases do not support it anymore.

@i0null@infosec.exchange @oliverherold@social.tchncs.de Certainly it's still a problem in human contexts sometimes. But a machine ought to do *better* than a human. Honestly, though, my problem has never been with the technology but with the humans making and misanthropically profiting off the dehumanizing uses of the technology, especially the generative models. But if AI proponents aren't going to take the misuse issues seriously, then there's no other choice available but to shun the tech directly, because computers can be made to be abusive on an industrial scale, and that's exactly what generative models are poised to do. I don't like having to make this argument. You don't like hearing this argument. Let's do something about it. Confront the obvious problem people and groups in the field.
