Not that one.

I'll be doing some political and other discussions here, with an appropriate CW where needed.

I don't expect any great number of trolls or cookers, but I will not be responding or arguing with them.

So don't even try Qevins and Qarens.

So according to Brady, the three time servers are in three different locations around Australia. The devices are 15 years old. Equipment that uses software relying on GPS data needs to be updated very often and regularly. GPS data needs to be accurate to microseconds to be reliable. Three devices in three locations can't regulate each other that accurately. They need redundancy at each location, and three devices for that redundancy. And they must be hardware, firmware, and software functionally identical. The devices check their timing against other devices in the system. Telstra were negligent with time critical systems and waiting longer than a few hours to correct the known faults. Three devices at $30,000 is nine devices around the country for triple redundancy at #270,000. A pittance for the company. Triple that to replace them with more reliable hardware, and triple that to install and comprehensively test prior to switching over. A few million dollars. Too much and too expensive for Telstra? It would take a few years to complete safely. #TelstraOutage

A famous Australian footballer, Peter "Crackers" Keenan, well known as a regular gambler, once said "Never bet on anything that can talk". Even in the 1980s, a football player who got his nickname from the regular wacky things he did and said, realised that gambling on people who would absolutely rig the system was a dumb idea. Betting agencies should all be disbanded, shut down, and abolished for good.

@artnacrea@mastodon.ie @jtk@infosec.exchange @paul_ipv6@infosec.exchange I don't know the cost of a modern replacement for the 20 year old devices that Telstra uses, but let's call it $100K just to be silly. Three of these would be about 1% of the suggested fine of $30 million. Swapping the two existing out, and adding 1 more still wouldn't make that much difference. But then, I wouldn't trust Telstra management to change a light bulb.

@jtk@infosec.exchange @paul_ipv6@infosec.exchange If, as seems likely, they only have the two time servers, then that's one short of the minimum redundancy required. If they had two and one rolled back after a reboot, then they have a 50/50 chance of the wrong device being used to set times. The system chose the wrong setting. If there were 3, then the two still correct would prevail. Money scrimping strikes again. To quote Pink Floyd, "For want of the price of tea and a slice, the old man died. " Us And Them - DSOTM.

Fines as a percentage of gross, not nett, income, and commensurate prison terms would be a very popular move. The highest speeding fine ever recorded was issued in Switzerland, amounting to approximately $1,091,340 for a driver caught going 170 kilometers per hour (105 mph) over the speed limit, based on a percentage of his income, per km/h over the limit.
