It's a nice touch, given that the original actor, Takei, is gay and that, in another film (Generations), Kirk belatedly discovers that Sulu's grown daughter is navigating the ship he is on. This was in turn part of a dig at Shatner's perceived indifference to younger TOS cast members: Kirk: "I never knew Hikaru had a daughter." Scotty: "You never asked." So, yes, hurray!
