Aging tech nerd. I live and work on the edge of the Celtic Sea. It’s very nice, but means I talk about the weather a lot. Sometimes I take bad pictures.

I hang out here for fun so I block and mute anyone and anything that I find even vaguely annoying.

If it helps then yes, you totally are way smarter than me and I am a clueless n00b. I’m OK with that.

One of my neighbours is a fisherman and has effectively domesticated this guy by regularly feeding him fish scraps.

It makes him very easy to photograph. Especially with Storm Dave providing some wind to give a bit of an artistic ruffle to his feathers and head plume.

By volume the most common were the Burnett moths as usual but the number of meadow browns, painted ladies, and cabbage whites was extremely high. There were some visible at almost every point where I stopped and looked around. #waterford #butterflies #biodiversity #ireland

There is a nice article in the Journal explaining why we are seeing so many butterflies this year, particularly down here in the south of the country. Tye Painted Lady and Clouded Yellows get a specific mention as species that are much more common this year. https://www.thejournal.ie/butterflies-2-7112245-Jul2026/?utm_source=thejournal&utm_content=top-stories #waterford #butterflies #biodiversity #ireland

Have you noticed more butterflies this summer? Here

The hot weather has brought an increase in butterflies, along with some new species.

@lorgonumputz @VeroniqueB99 I still have mine too, absolutely indestructible. I bought it back in 2001 or 2002 so it definitely referred to GW. The label is on the laptop sleeve in mine. Got at least 500k km travel out of it.

@leaverou@front-end.social It’s much easier to see with Starlings but the light has to be right. I have a bunch of shots like this one that shows the iridescent nature of the starlings fairly clearly. Obviously it would be much more dramatic if the camera could detect further into the IR and UV but this is unmodified out of a Nikon D5300 and is how I remember it looked to my eye. I’ve never noticed this with crows or ravens around here but it’s common to see that flash of weird blue and green on magpies.

@stepleton Well it’s still a fuse. And if the frankenfuse fits and has an appropriate rating then go you. I got reminded how useful real fuses are after I found this horror lurking in the power connection for my boiler after it started throwing the 63A main breaker.

@faduda@mastodon.ie @sinabhfuil@mastodon.ie Not sure what the insurance is supposed to cover. They aren’t cheap but it’s prettty hard to justify insurance for e-scooters if you’re not also doing it for normal road bikes. Registration makes some sort of sense to limit unsafe/overpowered/non-legally-compliant kit but again, what’s the point if the gardai can’t easily/remotely check that registration. Effective safety training for all road users would be a much better idea all round.

@quinn @rafi0t The pizza orders were off the charts last night around the Pentagon so the truly paranoid could easily believe this was a planned loss of an F-15. I am not that paranoid but it is funny to see.

@sonjdol I know he thinks this implies a deep strategic win by the plutocratic class and its drive to reverse centuries of human progress but I have to say I don’t think he really knows much about how working class people of any educational tier actually think, and how they will vote. Sure you can pull a Trump or Brexit once or twice if you control the media. But inequality and repression eventually bite and then the working classes eat the rich, burn their palaces, and behead kings

RE: @Tupp_ed@mastodon.ie

Once again Simon McGarr clearly explains how our politicians and media are failing us all miserably by insisting on keeping themselves plugged into algorithmic social media services that are being used to manipulate them.

The analysis of the alt-shite focus topics compared to our recent election cycles shows how badly distorted the media narrative around what issues get covered has been manipulated by interest groups from outside Ireland.

Yet again we have politicians giving testimonials to people who casually assault children.

It’s a bit of a pattern isn’t it?

@JimBliss If you want more nuclear just build a bigger interconnector to France. All the power we will be buying from them is nuclear already. We’d be buying the fuel from them and getting them to build the bloody thing in any case assuming we were mad enough to try to build it. The Children’s Hospital cost overruns would look like a bargain by the time anyone would be able to get a nuclear plant built here.

I’ve still got a working online account that I’ve retained since 1996. (It’s a @hotmail.com email address). Admittedly it’s gone through a lot of transformations but it still sends and receives email.

I used to have an iol.ie email that was older but it got lost during one of that domain’s many acquisitions in the early 2000s.

I’m curious about the oldest still functional accounts out there. Some academic orgs I assume? Anyone willing to share if they have one?

The one thing that remains ever constant is that any system, party, or religion built around ideological purity will end up turning on its own.

@michael_w_busch @sundogplanets Also ignoring the fact that there is literally no functional market for He3 as a fuel and will not be until a fusion reactor exists that can burn it which there won’t be because no one is working on that because the temperatures required are way too high. Could it work? Maybe, but it’s decades further away than DT or DD fusion. Anyone dangling the ‘He3 lunar regolith mining’ idea is a huckster looking to part the gullible from their money.

@bthalpin Yeah looking at it again it does pick that up pretty well it’s just that there is also a fairly wild level of general background development too. The Celtic Tiger effect really was a thing. The sprawling hotspot up around Derry / NE Donegal is also quite intriguing to me. My gut feel is that it’s very different on the other side of the border, simply from how rural NI feels to me when driving through it. Great map for this sort of musing. Nice work.

@bthalpin The East coast is driven by folks wanting somewhere close to Dublin that has access to beaches and the like but is also outside the main commuter belt. There’s another issue in a lot of coastal areas even far from Dublin/Cork/Galway but it’s along coastal strips so not as clear as this map. Much of the southeastern and southern coastline is effectively suburban apart from sections dominated by long runs of cliffs.

RE: @Nonilex@masto.ai

That’s fairly cheap when you think about it.

The ships are carrying an average of 2 million barrels of oil so the cargo on them is worth at least $30m more than it was before the war.

And that’s how much extra Iran are already earning for each of their own shipments. So they are absolutely raking in cash despite how heavily the US and Israel have been bombarding them.

Wait until Trump figures that one out.

@sinabhfuil@mastodon.ie that’s a minor issue, we’ve had motorbike tax disc holders forever. Not sure how the validity of whatever they contain could be checked easily though without the scooters having an actual registration plate. The Gardaí will still have to stop them to check, then check ID of the rider to see if they are the insured person. Seems like this is just adding more stuff for the sake of being seen to ‘do something’.
