Annie
Reader, writer, actor, cat/dog/critter lover who sometimes gets up in front of people and tells stories. I work with/for a tiny nonprofit progressive school in the U.S., as their development director; I help them tell their story, too.
I enjoy cooking and chatting about cooking. I like the smell of coffee, prefer to drink tea. Will occasionally comment on/review/recommend movies or TV series.
I'm an outdoorsy person; I like to bike, hike, and swim, though I'm not competitive about it. I have a regular touring bike for when I want to challenge myself, and an ebike for commuting and local trips in good weather. I was a mountain ranger in my 20s, still like to hike mountains. We live near water, so I swim in the summer; not a fan of pools, much.
My family is amazing and a great source of joy. @dwenius@toot.cat is a partner like no other. Yes, I realize how lucky I am. I'm expressly anti-fascist, because apparently that needs to be said out loud now.
Former talk.bizarre denizen, exceedingly queer on multiple axes.

Lounging in bed late at night, listening to a Loon’s haunting call. The Loon goes silent, and a chorus of frogs fill in with a sustained rhythmic burr of chirps.
At my elbow, the cat purrs and grooms himself, his tongue sometimes rasping against the duvet cover. Finally he stretches and settles, elongated against me.
I am ready to turn off the light and sleep.
Meet my new grandkitty, Mr. Sunday. No one is sure what his first name is -- he has yet to tell us. Perhaps he told you?
I am not a "music person". I can't feel the beat, can't count, am not emotionally swept away or gut-wrenched by instrumental genius.
But sometimes.
Sometimes I hear a folk singer, someone who is a poet both in word and in strummings, and I am stopped in my tracks. Stuck sitting in a darkening grocery store parking lot because I can't bear to move until the song, or the set, is over.
It always seems to happen when I accidentally catch one of West Virginia's live Mountain Stage broadcasts.
The first time it happened, I heard Chris Smither for the first time. Tonight it was Anna Tivel.
You want to listen to Anna Tivel, too.
In particular you want to listen to tonight's broadcast, whenever Mountain Stage gets around to posting it to their website, which will probably be a week from now. Tivel's songs will break your heart -- wide open. I mean, if you like that sort of thing.

Best Saturday ever: taking a long, luxurious nap whilst having free brake work done on my car.
They even gave the car a wash and rinsed the floor mats.
This is such a manufactured "problem." You'll have to pay a million in taxes on your 4 million dollar home that you only paid $500K for and no longer carry a mortgage on? Boo Hoo for You.
Pay your fair share in taxes and stop pretending a house is a piggy bank. Okay, Boomer?
“I would rather fall down a flight of stairs and fracture my hip than pay my fair share in taxes!”

I work for a tiny nonprofit school here in Vermont, and since 1984 we've held an annual Spring/Mother's Day "Brunch Bag" fundraiser.
We fill the bags with fresh foods from local Vermont food makers -- contents vary from year to year but generally include baked goods such as croissants/rolls, jam and cheese, sweet treats such as chocolates or brownies, plus a long stemmed rose.
Volunteerism is highly valued at our school: Brunch Bags is an all-volunteer effort, from procuring the contents, assembling the bags, mapping delivery routes, and personally delivering over 1,000 bags door-to-door throughout the county (and beyond).
As many as 300 bags are donated to individuals served by local service organizations such as COTS, Steps to End Domestic Violence, Cathedral Square, Lund Family Center, and the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge.
And that's where you come in.
If you'd like to buy a bag to donate to one of our service orgs, you would be supporting our school AND giving a complete stranger a really nice surprise this weekend AND helping us support our local businesses from whom we buy the contents for the bags.
Well, we buy SOME of the contents, but I also personally work with our school chef to bake the rosemary focaccia bread and blueberry pecan muffins for the vegan/gluten-free bags. 🙂
If you'd like to buy a bag to donate, you can go here:

Shout out to @AngelaPreston@toot.cat who somehow found out about our fundraiser without me saying a word and bought a bag to donate -- all the way from Kansas, no less. ❤️❤️❤️
Well that was damned delicious. Some wonderful fedicook posted a recipe or a link to a recipe for vegan creamy mushroom soup.
Since dairy is not being my friend right now, I thought I'd give it a try. I made the easiest, most plain version, it took all of 20 minutes, and I have plenty left over for lunch or dinner tomorrow. So many wins in so little time.
-2 TBL olive oil
-4 garlic cloves, chopped
-1 small onion, chopped
-225g mushrooms, sliced
-1 tsp fresh thyme, chopped
(or 1/3 tsp dried; I had fresh and used at least 2 tsp)
-salt and black pepper to taste
-300g silken tofu (or soft)
-250ml water (I used homemade chicken stock from my freezer, so not technically vegan; use whatcha got and whatcha like)
Saute the onion & garlic gently in the oil until onions are translucent and the garlic begins to turn golden. Stir in mushrooms, thyme, salt and pepper. Saute some more, about 4 minutes.
Remove 1 to 2 TBL of the mixture and set aside.
Add water/broth and tofu, and stir in. Increase heat and boil for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and blend with immersion blender until smooth enough for your liking. Add back in what you set aside, plus another drizzle of olive oil. And, if you're me, a tsp or so of sherry. Adjust salt and pepper to taste. Et voila!
You could also sprinkle some chili flakes or a drizzle of chili oil, for some spice. You could garnish with chopped fresh parsley or another fresh herb you like... you get the idea. But really, this is delicious even in its most simple form.
Finally, regarding the mushrooms, you can use whatever you have and what you like -- white, cremini, shitake, a mix, etc. I happened to use white; they were on sale (and they're generally the cheapest anyway). And if you wanted, you could saute some extra mushrooms on the side and toss those in at the end for a chunkier soup.

Brilliant in The Wire, of course, but also I’m glad to have a complete physical copy of Fringe. (Additional side benefit: John Noble and Leonard Nemoy chewing the scenery together.)
I love that I am able to add alt text to my profile banner and user photo... but I don't see any text when I either hover or click on the images, or any indication that they have alt text added.
If you want to understand the difference between the fedi(di)verse and corporate social media, read no further than Martin Shaw's Courting the Wild Twin:
Bad storytellers make spells.
Great storytellers break them.
This, now, is mostly an era of spell-making. Of tacit enchantment, of stultified imaginations and loins inflamed by so much factory-fodder lust, our relationships malfunction in their millions. We are on the island of the Lotus Eaters, curled up in the warm sleepy breeze of a Russian fairy tale as the robber steals away the Firebird. How do we wake up?
I will give you a little plot-spoiler right here. Sounds so very deceptively simple. The secret is relatedness.
Relatedness. Relatedness breeds love, and love can excavate conscience. Conscience changes the way we behave. Relatedness is how we wake up.
