Looking for that detailed map of the Death Star.

> It is power which corrupts. The consciousness that you possess power is itself the worst poison that corrodes the finest metal of man. (...) Because nothing is truer than that the means you use to attain your object soon themselves become your object.

@benjamingeer@piaille.fr yeah because the recruiters are incompetent or don't care enough to engage. Imagine if you were hired by your future colleagues? A team interview would ask you practically useful questions and you would have equal opportunity to see you really wanted to work with these people. No managers, no CEOs, no mental constipation. But this won't happen because we are hired to make money for some asshat who couldn't give less of a shit about you or your colleagues, making something that nobody gives a shit about. And so nobody gives a shit, and the few folks who come with passion slowly (a) stop giving a shit, (b) burn out, or (c) turn traitor to become asshats themselves. Capitalism! Giving you the middle finger. Suck it. Don't like it? Do something! But if you do anything that gives people hope, better buy some guns and get ready to kill a fuckton of cops, and then soldiers. (This has happened in Europe many times. Either the cops or the military wins.) Meanwhile, do as little as possible and safely sabotage whatever you can. Or join a worker's coop! Where are those?? @david_chisnall@infosec.exchange

@NotTheLBCGuy@mstdn.social It is 2500 BC. Greeks invent a scam they call "rule of the people". It is a democracy, meaning everyone can decide! Everyone except slaves, women, and, actually, literally everyone but a very small minority. The majority of folks needs to STFU and do as they are told - or else. It is now more than 4500 years later. The scam still works.

@herdsoft@gruene.social Yes I have started to look. I think the IT industry will go to shit, where capacity to create stuff will be locked into AI subscription models. Soon there will be 'certified AI' that will be required to use for certain projects. Just wait. Definitely high time to jump ship. @nixCraft@mastodon.social

@mstrife@kolektiva.social @blogdiva@mastodon.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu Actually, let me add some data to this point. In a recent investigation of the Monero crypto network, an estimated 80% of all the servers on the network are set up just to spy on the network. That's 13k servers - for a quite niche/obscure method of payment. https://probelab.io/blog/peering-into-privacy-a-deep-dive-into-the-monero-network-topology/ I really do think we ordinary mortals have a hard time grasping the true meaning of large budgets, and how easy big scale operations become with a lot of money. Big scale operations like setting up 13k servers to spy on a network can be hidden in a fraction of a percent of a budget. Just one surveillance project among thousands in an excel sheet. Imagine the resources and effort put into more mainstream things. In the Soviet Union, didn't half of the population work as spies for the government? 😁

@NfNitLoop@mastodon.social This. Not to mention each of those 500 members are identified with their phone numbers, and there is no real indication (except "we promise") that Signal isn't passing along group memberships to law enforcement to begin with. Just use email or whatever texting app you already have. Or use an actually secure alternative, i.e. one where you do not have to provide your phone number to use the service and there is not a single US-based company hosting all the communications. @micahflee@infosec.exchange

@wasootch@mastodon.sdf.org

I don't know if we have people with enough information to resist. Resisters too are wanting authoritarian governments.

This is a good point and I think this issue was there with the Nazis. Disinformation has been a tool of the government trade for a long time and people didn't 'look the other way' for no reason. Just as the absolute majority of us do squat against oil companies burning down the world.

Why is that? What do we believe in that makes us stay at home, paying taxes for their subsidies?

This is part of the job of the resistance - to invest time disentangling the truth, and help people access accurate information.

@nazgul I think yes. There's always an incentive then to buy an even heavier car, as I'll be slightly safer when driving then. They should yield to the military industrial complex (that, after all, is the Founding Principle and societal backbone of the US) and let people buy decommissioned tanks with the guns removed. @davidzipper @ryansingel

@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social so uh, why do we believe that 'opting out' will make any difference what-so-ever? All these shiny buttons we can press, saying 'privacy' on them. And we're banging away like monkeys, not grasping that the folks who built the machine with the buttons on it see us as... their monkeys.

@edri@eupolicy.social Yes, it is a government, after all. Nothing good will be produced by it except by accident. EU sees that open source is the last loop hole out of corporate big tech. This is a hostile take-over motivated by the government's need for control, nothing else.

@theeclecticdyslexic@mstdn.social Yes I thought so.. thanks for the info. Well, I wonder how many on stock Android go through the pains of donating to developers? I'd think most of them are "download and see if it works" and that's it. Then it will stop working, and they will use corpo spyware shit instead. It will be interesting to see what this move by Google does to donations to good open source projects. I'd guess Google is betting on that people will just give up on open source. I think people will double down on it, and donate more, because it because even more obvious that it's the only option to keep OSS alive. Maybe I'm naive. @IzzyOnDroid@floss.social
